Callum Marshall shines in debut as Huddersfield Town take opportunities
The new arrival from West Ham United put in a promising performance with a goal and an assist, as Michael Duff's eight changes in the League Cup offered chances to impress
If we didn’t know what Callum Marshall was about before, we do now.
The West Ham United loanee was that rarest of things in the modern game: a genuine unknown quantity, thanks to his limited senior minutes for club and country at this early stage of his career.
Marshall’s record at youth level had been impressive, but, as we've seen with his former teammate Mipo Odubeko, that doesn’t always translate into first-team success, even when going out on loan to a lower level.
We shouldn’t get carried away with 71 good minutes in the cup at home to struggling League Two opposition. Still, Marshall couldn’t have done much more to endear himself to the John Smith’s Stadium crowd on his debut.
The young, slight striker got them onside early by responding to a hefty and no doubt painful challenge by getting up and carrying on — exactly what a kid his size needs to do to show the classic League One Big Hairy Centre-Back that he won’t be bullied.
