1. Saturday could be ugly
Huddersfield Town fans have turned up to every away game in large numbers this season, even over the past three months when the side has been a consistent and frustrating letdown. Meanwhile, season ticket sales for this campaign were strong for a League One club.
Those are signs of a fanbase that was willing to not quite forgive and forget, but move on from the problems of last season and get behind the team in the hope they could fulfil their promise of automatic promotion.
They are now 8th with just seven games left to play. Quite understandably, the fans let the players have it after this latest impotent defeat.
When the players went over to applaud the 962 Town fans in the Stacey West Stand, they were met with boos and chants of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt.” We’ve all seen this type of display from them far too often this season to disagree with the sentiment.
Performances like this have been far more typical than the abysmal one against Charlton on Saturday. Instead, we all had to endure 90 more minutes of Town huffing, puffing, struggling and straining to get nowhere.
Football shouldn’t feel as Sisyphean as Huddersfield Town make it look. At their feet, the ball is a boulder, heaved painfully uphill only to stall, shudder, and tumble back to where it started.
Having 64% possession and zero shots on target takes a particular kind of uselessness — one that has been much too commonplace this season. There is no incision. There is no sense that anybody is taking the responsibility required to create anything.
The atmosphere at the John Smith’s Stadium against Mansfield on Saturday could become toxic unless there is a significant improvement.
