Five con-questions as Huddersfield Town’s miserable season draws to close
The Terriers lost to promoted Ipswich Town on the final day, but with relegation already a fait accompli, we're more interested in the future
1. Have you ever gatecrashed someone else’s party?
Huddersfield Town’s trip to Portman Road felt like being served divorce papers one weekend and then deciding, in a fit of grief-induced lunacy, to gatecrash a stranger’s wedding the next.
Watching what love looks like from afar, but no longer being able to feel it themselves, Town cut a forlorn figure. They ambled around the cold buffet and made the most tenuous small-talk with the other guests, before departing, sadly, back to their hotel for a little sit and maybe a little cry. Meanwhile, the happy couple danced and twirled and kissed into the night. What else did you expect?
The Terriers’ starting XI and system screamed (among other things) please don’t completely embarrass yourselves here lads. A definitive and defensive-minded back five lined up, rather than a three with wing-backs. That effort cannot be described as a success, but hey…it’s not like it mattered. They were already down.
This is not a time for conclusions: everything there is to say about this miserable season has been said. Instead, what we have is questions. Many, many questions.
2. What now for Andre Breitenreiter?
Kevin Nagle flew over to take in the final day’s action and will surely already have joined other decision-makers Jake Edwards and Mark Cartwright in having spoken to Breitenreiter, even if the German remains insistent that discussions will begin now the season is over.
