We’ll admit that we were worried about this game after learning how Bristol Rovers go about their business. Breaking down a counter-attacking, long ball side has been a bit of a nightmare for Town this season, after all.
Turns out we didn’t need to worry. Town maintained firm control from the first minute and continued their domination unabated until they had secured a three-goal lead.
We’ll talk about that last half hour later, but to begin with, it’s worth saying that the first 60 minutes were as convincing as we have seen Town on the ball this season and, in all honesty, for a long time before that.
The starting line-up was exactly as we predicted, right down to the substitutes. We don’t bring this up to congratulate ourselves but rather to make the point that this system and these personnel more or less picked themselves, and all for positive reasons.
It wasn’t long ago — after Reading, we think — that David Hartrick said on the podcast that he felt like Michael Duff didn’t know his best team, which the head coach explicitly confirmed shortly thereafter.
But it has now crystalised into this, at least for the time being, which isn’t how crystals work but shut up. Who knows how long it will last, especially with Lasse Sorensen departing so quickly with an injury. Still, some of the problems Town had recently are starting to feel like they have solutions, which is all you can ask for.
