Five conclusions: Huddersfield Town defence earns point at Wrexham
Oh yeah, draws, remember them? Plus: Michael Duff's respectable selection policy, the need for more on the ball against the big boys, and a shot at an excellent week
1. Huddersfield Town’s first draw of the season was a good one
Just to confirm, when a league game finishes with both sides having scored the same number of goals, or with neither team having scored, it turns out they call it a day there and each side gets one point. This is called a ‘draw’, or if you’re American a ‘tie’, or if you’re a bit of a ponce or a journalist desperately in need of some elegant variation, a ‘stalemate’.
We thought it was worth the recap, because Town haven’t finished honours even (that’s another one) since the 1-1 draw with Birmingham back in April which effectively relegated both sides and left everybody miserable.
This was the opposite of that: all sides of the ground seemed happy to share the spoils (and another) once the final whistle blew on this goalless encounter.
From speaking to journalists who have seen Wrexham play, and from picking the brains of the local media pre-match, there is a bit of a vibe of Huddersfield Town 2021/22 about Wrexham: not particularly outstanding or dominant, but riding a wave of momentum and hard work to an excellent run of results. The home fans were pleased with their side’s efforts against one of the big boys of the division and accepted this as a good result.
And for Town, who have been so up and then down and now look to be on the way up again…a draw away from home against the side sitting second in the table and likely to be in the mix come the end of the season was a perfectly good day at the office, on the whole.
Wrexham had the better of the first half, Town the better of the second, but there was only one major shot of note, superbly saved by birthday boy Jacob Chapman with the home fans already out of their seats ready to celebrate. From there, neither defence put a foot wrong; it was impossible to argue with the result or the scoreline, despite both sides playing for the win.
Oh, and just one little nugget that doesn’t fit anywhere else: this was Town’s first league point in a Tuesday night kick-off since 18th April 2023 (a 1-1 draw away to Sunderland), with their past six all lost by an aggregate score of 3-18.1
