Five conclusions: Huddersfield Town laboured but victorious again
Josh Koroma's late strike won the day in the end as we all watched the same game on repeat once again
1. Same match again, is it?
This season has stretched the limits of the five conclusions format more than any other, which is saying something, given the repetitive dirge served up over the past two campaigns.
That’s not to say this season is anything like as bad, obviously. Huddersfield Town are going for promotion and have a decent shout of succeeding, even if it is via the play-offs rather than the preferred automatic route. Of course, that’s better than battling relegation.
But we’re not sure we’ve known a campaign to serve up the same talking points and the same problems again and again quite like this side have managed. In fairness to them, they are pretty solid defensively most of the time. They can string together some nice moves, but tend to do so sparingly across games rather than grind the opposition into submission. They’re decent at moving through the thirds but often a bit clueless in the final one.
And because Town are generally better man-for-man than most of the sides they face, that’s usually enough for them to get a draw. Sometimes it gets them a win. Less often, it ends in defeat.
It’s rarely fun to watch. Since Boxing Day, no set of fans has seen fewer goals, for or against, than Huddersfield Town fans (just 1.7 per game) — and bear in mind they’ve had a 2-2 draw and a 3-2 defeat in that span. Seven of their past 11 games have featured a maximum of one goal.
Oh, and one of Town’s players will be announced as a medium-to-long-term injury on a weekly basis.
Ticks all round. The scoreline has differed on each occasion, but we have now seen basically the same game three times in a row.
Still, Town have at least done us the courtesy of actually winning their past two games. Away from home, in particular, that does tend to make all other considerations fade into the background. But bloody hell, it’s repetitive, isn’t it?
