Five conclusions: Huddersfield Town back on track at Bolton
The Terriers took a four-goal win away from miserable Bolton Wanderers with a much-improved performance
1. Huddersfield Town took full advantage of Bolton
Plenty of Huddersfield Town fans may well have been given pause after seeing Michael Duff had gone with the same starting line-up as against Rotherham; had this game not gone to plan, the questions that were posed in that trip to South Yorkshire would have amplified into genuine grumps.
Instead, the travelling fans ended the day chanting ‘we want five’ for the first time since attending Abz and co’s big reunion tour (you all went, don’t lie). This was Town’s biggest away win since beating Rochdale by the same scoreline in the FA Cup in 2017, and their biggest in the league since the famous Jordan Rhodes-inspired six-goal win at Wycombe in 2012.
We mean no criticism when we say this was not a blistering, balls-to-the-wall performance that blew Bolton away. The game had been relatively even until Josh Koroma directed home Callum Marshall’s excellent cross late in the first half (with Koroma in what looked to be an offside position, it must be said).
Bolton then produced a wretched second-half performance that we understand has more or less typified their efforts since losing last season’s play-off final. Been there, Bolton.
But that’s to take nothing away from Town, who put in a much more disciplined performance than before their mini international break. After that extra bit of time on the training pitch and a few days away from competitive action, they kept their clarity and focus far better than they had over the previous few games. Duff described it as the first real complete performance his side had put in this season.
