Five conclusions on Huddersfield Town's clueless showing in 1-3 loss to Preston
Darren Moore's side went into hiding in a terrible performance
1. We honestly don’t understand what Huddersfield Town were trying to achieve in the first half
Unfortunately, we’ve seen this performance before. Every time Darren Moore tried to remove the anchor and get his side playing more progressive football, this is what we get: a side that hides from the ball and then, should it accidentally come their way, looks completely clueless as to what to actually do with it.
At least, we’re assuming that playing progressive football was the intention, based on the line-up if nothing else: Sorba Thomas and Josh Koroma at wing-back, two centre-forwards, and an attempt to include a passing midfielder in the shape of Josh Austerfield alongside Jonathan Hogg and the in-form David Kasumu.
We’ve spent weeks bemoaning the lack of attacking options available to Moore, and he’s spent weeks telling us about the work they’ve been putting in on the training ground to try and overcome that.
Well, the best of the attacking options are back, and they were selected, and yet this performance was the result. We’ve held back from criticising the manager so far, feeling his powers have been limited to the point of impotence; but even our patience was tested by this. His side showed nothing.
What exactly was the intention here? We’re genuinely asking, because we really couldn’t tell.
