Five conclusions: Huddersfield Town's game of two halves against Lincoln
The Terriers rescued a 2-2 draw after trailing by two goals at the break, with Michael Duff correcting a faulty initial selection and the players putting in a much-improved second half performance
1. That was Huddersfield Town’s season in a nutshell
Tick, tick, tick, tick. If you’d produced a Huddersfield Town 2024/25 bingo card for this game, you’d have had the full grid entirely filled in.
Town are not beyond putting in a rancid performance on their off days this season, and that’s what we got in the first half.
“First half we were just slow, lethargic with the ball. Their players have run past our players, we didn't win first contact. Every time the ball went in the air their centre-half headed it and then their centre-forwards picked it up,” Duff said after the game.
“The second goal is a perfect example; it's just a throw in. They win the first contact, they win the second contact, they win a duel, they win a duel, they win a duel, and then they play inside us. People shouldn't be able to play inside us. Then two midfielders run past our midfielders.”
But then, of course, came the comeback. Town once again showed their newfound fortitude and resilience to bounce back and get something out of a game in which they had failed to impress, complete with a goal from an unlikely source.
I had written the game off at the break, feeling that the best Town could hope for was an improved performance to give them a bit of momentum ahead of the trip to Cambridge. (Matt Glennon, to his credit, called it correctly and said Town would find a way back.)
It turns out there’s a good reason for my pessimism, mind. The last time Town overturned a two-goal deficit to secure at least a point was back in April 2015, when Jacob Butterfield and Joe Lolley found the net for Chris Powell’s side to cancel out the early two-goal lead Blackburn Rovers had taken through Rudy Gestede and Jordan Rhodes.
We felt coming into the game that four points against Lincoln and Cambridge would be an acceptable return for Town, and they are still in with a shot of that. After where they were at the break, it was difficult to ask for more. It’s just a shame they put themselves in that position in the first place.
