Five conclusions: Mercifully, it's over
Plus thoughts on Jonathan Hogg's big goodbye, Jacob Chapman's failed ambition and a blank slate for the summer ahead
1. Thank goodness that’s over
On my way out of the house, I found my ticket to the Peterborough United press box in the inside pocket of my blazer.
How young and naïve we all were nine months ago, watching Michael Duff’s side pick the Posh off at London Road with a well-organised high press. They dominated the run of play against a team that had graced the play-offs just a few months before. We could have been forgiven for thinking that an enjoyable season lay ahead.
Instead, Town started a downward trajectory from there, recovered for a couple of months, and then plummeted back to levels of terrible beyond what anybody could have foreseen going into Christmas.
As a result, this season has been done for a long time. However, finally getting the last game of the campaign finished felt like pulling back into your driveway after a long and disastrous business trip. Nothing has gone the way you would have wanted, and you know that on Monday there’s going to be a lot of work to do — but at least it’s finally over.
There is no sugar coating, silver lining or other positive spin idioms to apply here. This has been a horrendous season for Huddersfield Town by any measure. Leyton Orient’s clinical, incisive four-goal performance, which assured them of a top six finish, only added insult to Town’s considerable injury list.
But it’s done now, officially, and there is no way for Town to make up for this but to be much better next season.
2. Farewell, Hoggy
Jonathan Hogg’s tears as he completed his lap of honour and made his way back towards the tunnel for the final time marked the end of an era for Town.
