Five conclusions: More first-world problems from victory at Leyton Orient
One of these days we might stop moaning about Huddersfield Town's strikers, but not today. Plus: coping with injuries and a couple of reassuring goals
1. Copy and paste, copy and paste
There’s been a sense that a lot of Huddersfield Town fans, though pleased at their side’s upturn in form, are unhappy that they’re not routinely pummelling opponents. We’re genuinely not sure if they got what they wanted from this game or not.
As Michael Duff put it after the final whistle, it could have been five-nil and nobody could have complained. Town were far from brilliant, but clearly superior to a poor Leyton Orient side for 90% of the game. The hosts were not helped when Jordan Graham had to go off injured late on, just moments after coming on as their fifth and final substitution.
But Town repeatedly forgave Orient their invitations to score. Bojan Radulovic and Josh Koroma set the tone four minutes in, with the former seemingly caught by surprise by Ollie Turton’s excellent cross from deep, before Koroma got the ball caught beneath his feet when he should have scored…and he was needlessly offside anyway.
Koroma later had a poor penalty saved, the second time in a row he has been denied from 12 yards, after failing to score against Northampton. Ben Wiles missed a one-on-one after exploiting a Steven Gerrard-esque slip on the halfway line to go clean through on the keeper with all the time in the world. Freddie Ladapo got into good areas several times, and delivered a competition winner’s shot on each occasion.
Fortunately, Town’s superiority won out, thanks to Michal Helik’s easy header off Mickel Miller’s corner and Callum Marshall’s persistent work in the press, with the ball rebounding into the net as he blocked the Orient goalkeeper’s clearance.
It feels like an odd position to be in, complaining that a two-nil win should have been five, and we need to have a bit of self-awareness here: that’s the kind of first world problem we have previously mocked fans of other clubs for whinging about.
But god, it’s frustrating to watch sometimes, and makes you a bit concerned about some of the games Town have coming up against sides who seem less desperate to concede.
