Five conclusions: New shape, same story for Huddersfield Town
Rotherham held the Terriers to a goalless draw at the John Smith's Stadium, and even being reduced to ten men didn't stop it feeling like another missed opportunity
1. This week feels like four points dropped more than two won
This game was there for the taking, even more so than the Burton one.
Huddersfield Town avoided falling behind this time, taking control of the first half with a commanding performance. They looked good with their build-up play in a new-look 4-3-3, but their inability to finish once again proved costly.
At half-time it seemed like just a matter of time before Town took the lead, but their standards fell as Rotherham’s rose. The game became more competitive than any of us would have liked, with a couple of last-ditch interventions from Jacob Chapman and Michal Helik maintaining Town’s clean sheet.
Still, even after going down to ten men late on, Town looked the more likely to get the winner. Just like against Burton, however, they left it too late.
It feels like a knee-jerk reaction to begin worrying about the wider implications. After all, Town are fourth in the table with one or two games in hand on two of the sides above them. What’s more, they’re on a 14-game unbeaten streak, have half a season left to play, and there are another four weeks remaining in the January transfer window. If they had played Wigan on New Year’s Day and won, this draw would feel slightly less troubling. They beat Stockport, like, ten days ago.
That said, in pure league table terms, Town are now seven points away from the automatic promotion places, and closer to seventh–placed Stockport, thanks to having dropped six points in their past four home games.
We’re not at panic stations yet, but Town need to get their unbeaten run back to a string of wins to stop it from seeming a little bit…Lee Clark-y. We’re not there yet, but it’s a risk.
