Kevin Nagle says it all in five conclusions on Plymouth draw
The chairman's tweet within minutes of the final whistle summed up the situation at the John Smith's Stadium perfectly
1. A point does very little for Huddersfield Town
NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!
Kevin Nagle’s simple three-word tweet said it all. Forget about results elsewhere going Huddersfield Town’s way: this was a game they should have won on paper, had to win to usher in what could have been a new chapter in the season, and absolutely should have won on the day.
Plymouth were there for the taking, and while we expect many fans to sneer at this, much of Town’s performance could be described as adequate; flawed, but adequate. Even so, the scoreline makes it impossible to emphasise those positives at this stage; not when we have already given them plenty of good grace by accepting encouragement even in defeat against Middlesbrough and written off the Leicester game as far too tall a mountain to expect them to climb.
Indeed, the fact that Town actually didn’t play that badly but still came up short has turned from encouraging (as it was against Boro) to concerning. It’s worrying to think that this is the best they can do.
You can point to the fact that Town had — let’s see now — four players playing out of position, including a teenager who was probably their best performer on the day, and that they now have (again, the calculator comes out) five centre-forward options out injured. But we’re now past the point of reasons and excuses. There’s fewer than twenty games left in the season. They need points, regardless of their issues.
We set Town a target of seven from this run of four games, so a victory against Blackburn next weekend would put a different complexion on things; but again, it’s hard to take solace from that after watching Town leave two additional points on the pitch here. Even if they do go on to reach that target, we will all be lamenting that it really should have been nine points, not seven.
