Five conclusions: Sexy defending and Herbie Kane appreciation at Wycombe
A professional and solid away performance enlivened by a bit of Kane magic gave Town their most important win of the season to date away to second-placed Wycombe
1. Another statement win for Huddersfield Town
Let’s be honest, they needed that, just to put everyone’s minds back at ease. Well…something approaching ease.
Had they not drawn against Burton and Rotherham, a point at Wycombe would have been perfectly decent. However, Town’s shortcomings in front of goal in those games left them in need of the full three points in one of their toughest games of the season, even if only as short-term reassurance.
Sure enough, Town continued their recent mini-trend of winning the games where they’ve had to fight and scrap for everything, despite having drawn games they have more or less completely dominated.
Exactly as they did against Stockport, Town took an early lead, spent the rest of the game on the back foot, stood up to everything that was thrown at them, and came away with a victory against a promotion rival.
Developing that habit will be crucial for Town over the rest of the season, and there was a palpable sense of frustration among the home fans and local media that they made Wycombe look so guileless.
Town are becoming specialists in these kinds of encounters. The only current top-half sides to beat them this season are Birmingham and Reading. You can only add Wrexham and Lincoln to the list when it comes to top-half sides who have managed a draw.
That means Birmingham are the only League One side with a better points per game record against current top half sides this season; the next best, Wrexham, don’t even come close.
It’s a shame about all those dropped points to sides in the bottom half, obviously. Had it not been for that, Town would be sitting pretty in the automatic promotion places already. This season Town have been the Lieutenant Worf of League One: the big, formidable powerhouse who is somehow liable to get repelled by an unlikely smaller foe.
But that’s a topic for another day. This is a result to celebrate, in any context. The unbeaten streak now stands at 15 and counting, and this victory, away to the team sitting in second place, was the biggest result of the lot.
