Five conclusions: Turton joy and Ladapo misery in victory over Wigan
Yes, somehow we actually have five talking points from a game that provided so little in the way of entertainment
1. Well, that was exactly what we expected
Wigan have the second-best defensive record in the division but aren’t much cop up top. Huddersfield have the third-best defensive record in the division but aren’t currently much cop up top (but excellent on set pieces). What other kind of game did you expect on a Tuesday night in December?
It was far from a classic but as has been the case throughout their ongoing unbeaten run, Town found a way to get the job done. Wigan were solid, but Town backed up how good they have been at finding goals from all kinds of different sources lately by getting Ollie Turton onto the scoresheet for his first-ever competitive goal for the club.
It says it all the most enjoyable part of the game was Wigan boss Shaun Maloney stripping off his coat in a huff after an extended rant to the fourth official that earned him a yellow card, leaving him to wear only his turtleneck in the cold weather for the rest of the game as putting the coat back on would have been too embarrassing. A very enjoyable bit of Reeves and Mortimer handbag cooing ensued.
But hey, winning takes precedence over entertainment sometimes, particularly in games like these, and Town have got into superb habits at the John Smith’s Stadium recently. That’s seven wins in a row on home turf in all competitions now, and eight games home and away without defeat in League One.
With Birmingham and Stockport going head to head on Wednesday night, Town have either guaranteed they will go into the weekend a place higher in the table (they’re now up to fourth), a step closer to third-placed Birmingham, or both. Grand.
