A handful of sides played their games in hand on Tuesday evening, bumping Huddersfield Town out of the top six with 13 games played.
The club have been clear that their goal is to secure an immediate return to the Championship following last season’s relegation. With over a quarter of the season gone, how realistic is that aim?
To find out, we’ve fed 30 seasons’ worth of third-tier results into a fat spreadsheet to see how things have unfolded historically. That’s every season from 1993/94 to 2023/24, excluding 2019/20.
How many points are Town likely to need to get promoted?
Town are currently on 1.69 points per game, which would translate to 77 or 78 points if extrapolated over the course of a full season. That would probably be enough for a play-off place, but they will need to improve that record to stand any chance of getting automatic promotion.
