Huddersfield Town and the long road back to belief

There’s been some encouraging signs on and off this pitch this week - but now the Terriers must keep it going

BELIEVE. That was the rather They Live-esque branding that accompanied Huddersfield Town’s 2010/11 League One play-off campaign.

Town fans did believe — and at Old Trafford, they were handed a harsh lesson in how horrible it is to see your dreams smashed to pieces before your eyes.

We’re not sure Town could reasonably tell fans to BELIEVE now.

When I was preparing for our season preview podcast, I looked at all 24 League One teams to see both what the bookies and media were saying about their prospects and what the mood was among the fans.

Practically no one was more pessimistic about their side than Huddersfield Town fans, who were generally expecting another season finishing around 9th or 10th, or perhaps even a bit lower.

This was despite the bookies having them as fifth favourites to win the league, a view that was roughly reflected in league table predictions across magazines, podcasts and websites. Most of the ones I saw had Town somewhere between 4th and 7th.

It’s easy to understand why that might be the case.
