Coming up next
A trip to Cardiff City awaits on Saturday lunchtime. The newly-relegated side currently sit top of League One having played at least a game fewer than most of the sides below them in the table — second-placed Stevenage not included.
Brian Barry-Murphy’s side rank second-best for both goals scored and their defensive record this season and have been the most effective side in League One for creating chances. Cardiff take a possession-heavy approach, averaging 61% possession so far this season, and are particularly aggressive with their press.
Forward Yousef Salech has been a particular goal threat this season, racking up seven league goals, while 18-year-old Ronan Kpakio has been a revelation at right-back and currently leads the League One assists charts (with six).
We’ll have five conclusions on the game for our paying subscribers first thing on Sunday morning, followed by further reaction in Monday morning’s podcast. Get signed up not if you’re not already — and don’t forget We Are Terriers gift subscriptions are also available (you can schedule it to start on Christmas day if you’re looking for a stocking filler!).
Then it’s another away trip for Huddersfield on Tuesday evening as Lee Grant takes his side to Northampton Town. Like half the division, the Cobblers have struggled for consistency this season, and go into this weekend 15th in the table yet still just five points away from the top six.
Northampton have one of the strongest defensive records in League One so far, conceding just 17 goals in as many games. But they have struggled at the other end of the pitch: only bottom side Port Vale (11) have managed fewer goals than Kevin Nolan’s side (16), and nobody has had fewer efforts on goal.
Town are likely to face a very different tactical challenge from Cardiff, with Northampton playing the most long balls and fewest short passes per game in the division; Cardiff, by contrast, play the most short passes per game and the second-fewest long balls.
Huddersfield Town injuries and absences
Jack Whatmough (calf) and Marcus McGuane (groin) are still working their way back from injury, with Whatmough ‘progressing nicely’ through the later stages of his recovery.
Mickel Miller is ruled out until around late January with a hamstring injury.
Herbie Kane has returned to light individual training but is still some way off returning from his groin injury.
Antony Evans does not need surgery on the knee injury that forced him off against Luton last week, but is still expected to be out for ‘a couple of months’.
Will Alves (foot) and Zepiqueno Redmond (knee) remain out for the longer term.
Predicted line-up to face Cardiff City
