Coming up next
Huddersfield Town host struggling Burton Albion in Saturday’s 3pm kick-off.
Gary Bowyer’s side finished a point clear of the drop last season thanks in no small part to claiming a 3-0 win at home to Town with just five games left to play.
But Albion have taken just one point from their five league games since beating Mansfield on the opening day, leaving them in the relegation zone ahead of Blackpool and Peterborough only on goal difference.
Burton have particularly struggled in front of goal, scoring just five times in their six league games so far. Just three of those goals have come from open play
The last time Burton won a game on the road was at bottom-of-the-table Shrewsbury in March. However, they are the only side Town have ever hosted at least twice in the league without claiming a home win: the Brewers won 1-0 in the Championship in April 2017 and drew 1-1 in League One last December.
Town will then turn their attentions to the Carabao Cup as they host a little-known outfit called Manchester City in Wednesday evening’s 7:45pm kick-off.
City are managed by an ambitious up-and-coming manager named Josep Guardiola, though he is often known simply as ‘Pep’. The former Barcelona B coach is really making a name for himself with his innovative brand of tactics and is being tentatively tipped to go far in the English game.
Guardiola's side will be full of confidence and hoping to pull off a shock away to Huddersfield after recently claiming victory over Premier League minnows and cross-city rivals United and a 2-0 win over a ten-man Napoli side featuring two United outcasts. We also hear their centre-forward’s dad used to play for Leeds.
Huddersfield Town injuries and absences
Owen Goodman will serve the third and final game of his red-card suspension against Burton.
Ben Wiles missed the Bradford game with a knock but is back in contention this weekend.
Herbie Kane went off during the Bradford game and is being assessed for Burton.
Lynden Gooch has missed the past three games with a knock and is unlikely to feature this weekend.
Mickel Miller last featured away to Reading at the beginning of August while Antony Evans has been out since the summer with a knee injury. Both players are expected to be out for at least a couple more weeks yet but are now entering the final parts of their rehab.
Jack Whatmough is not expected back in action until mid-October thanks to a calf issue.
Marcus McGuane has been struggling with a groin niggle and has been assessed on a week to week basis.
Jacob Chapman has been out since summer with an ankle injury.
Predicted line-up to face Burton Albion
4-2-3-1/3-4-1-2: Lee Nicholls; Lasse Sorensen, Josh Feeney, Joe Low, Murray Wallace; Ryan Ledson, David Kasumu; Marcus Harness, Leo Castledine, Ruben Roosken; Alfie May.
Substitutes: Ellis Litherland, Sean Roughan, Herbie Kane, Ben Wiles, Will Alves, Zepiqueno Redmond, Joe Taylor.
Huddersfield Town Women
Town Women will travel to Norton & Stockton for Sunday’s 2pm kick-off hoping to extend their good start to the new WNL Division One North season.
Glen Preston’s side ran out 3-0 winners over Durham last weekend thanks to a Fliss Jones brace and a Laura Elford strike, keeping them in second place and in touching distance of league leaders Cheadle Town Stingers.
Walk4Pounds is on Saturday morning!
While I’ve got you, just want to ask if you have two minutes and a few quid to spare for a very good cause. Tomorrow I’ll be taking part in the shorter 10-mile route for Walk for Denis, which culminates at Accu Stadium ahead of the League One clash with Burton Albion.
Organised by Huddersfield Town, the walk is raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society and the Huddersfield Town Foundation in memory of the late, great Denis Law.
You can make a donation here - any amount gratefully received. Especially as it’s meant to absolutely lash it down.
