Huddersfield Town have two of the sharpest strikers in League One — so why aren't they scoring more?
Alfie May and Joe Taylor are proven EFL goalscorers but the Terriers haven't tapped into their pedigree
Alfie May was Huddersfield Town’s tenth signing in a busy summer transfer window. After missing out on him a year earlier, Town took advantage of Birmingham City’s promotion to the Championship by adding a proven League One marksman to their attacking ranks.
May joined Town with 89 League One goals to his name, and there’s simply no questioning that kind of number.
Joe Taylor, ten years May’s junior, was brought in with 21 goals in League Two for Colchester United and Lincoln City in League One. He too was signed with nothing but goals in mind.
The new Terriers transfer regime came out swinging in the summer. Manager Lee Grant has a team built for promotion. That’s the target and the expectation but the bumps in the road, though not unexpected, have been encountered early in the season and present a serious test of the team’s mettle.
Town are far from a lost cause. However, having greater consistency in flaws than in results is an unwelcome coda to a League One record of six wins in 11 matches. League leaders Stevenage are six points clear of Grant’s team in sixth and have a game in hand.
