Huddersfield Town player ratings as Manchester City quality wins the day
Lee Grant's Terriers put in a really solid defensive performance and even hit the post late on, but were undone by two quality finishes to go out of the Carabao Cup
Lee Nicholls - 7
No chance on Phil Foden’s well-struck opener as it curled away from his reach, nor Savinho’s strike that went in off the underside of the crossbar. Great stop early in the second half after racing off his line and getting a hand up to an attempt to dink it over him.
Lasse Sorensen - 7
Didn’t put a foot wrong in a superb first half — blocked numerous crosses from Savinho and got forward well on the rare occasions the opportunity presented itself. Just caught slightly lacking on a couple of occasions after the break, letting Nico O’Reilly get in behind to get one-on-one with Nicholls soon after the break then got caught in two minds by Savinho as City doubled their lead, unsure as to whether to expect a cross or a shot.
Josh Feeney - 8
Excellent and assured showing at the back, putting himself in position to cut out several potentially dangerous crosses. Won a really handy flick-on off a free kick to create a chance for Zepi Redmond.
Murray Wallace - 8
Won an important challenge early in the second half to prevent a potential tap in, only for a teammate to land on his leg. Shook it off and carried on, and continued to make important blocks and interceptions to stop City balls across the box. Headed a free kick over the bar just after the hour.
Sean Roughan - 8
Alternately the left-back and a centre-back in a five depending on the phase of play and whether Redmond was back or not. Tried his best to get Town on the attack whenever he got on the ball and did his defensive duties confidently. Particularly vital to Town’s defensive efforts in the second half
David Kasumu - 7
Distracted for just half a second by Foden’s one-two with Divine Mukasa, allowing the England midfielder to get the space to open the scoring from outside the box. Won a great tackle to put Town on the attack as they started to come into the game a bit more midway through the second half.
Dan Vost - 7
Tasked with helping keep an eye on Foden and co. Had a bit of a job on his hands getting used to the pace of City’s play at times but adapted well enough. Constantly on the move trying to close space whenever City played into the middle, mopped up some loose balls in midfield when Town were able to force it free with their pressing, and made some good interventions inside his own box. Once again did his prospects no harm with Town currently short of numbers in central midfield.
Marcus Harness - 6
Tried to help Town get out of their own half by acting as the midfield fulcrum. Played as part of a narrow midfield four off the ball as Town tried to limit City’s space through the middle..
Ben Wiles - 7
Wore the captain’s armband and led the press alongside Dion Charles and put in a tireless shift. Just needed someone on the end of his ball across the face of goal towards the end of the first half. Did some important defending on the edge of his own box in the second half.
Zepiqueno Redmond - 7
Made his first start for the club. Dropped into the defence to form a back five when City crossed the halfway line, which we suspect is not entirely his game but he did alright. Showed some nice touches going forward, skying the ball off one of them and then later playing in Wiles for Town’s best attack of the first period. Took a knock towards the end of the first half but was able to continue. Volleyed off target off a set piece early in the second half.
Dion Charles - 6
Prized for his pressing on this occasion, and boy did he need to be up for it. Chased down every ball he could and must have covered quite some ground by the time he went off.
Substitutes
Leo Castledine (for Harness 62) - Straight into the action by winning a Town a free kick from which they headed over the bar. Caused O’Reilly some problems out wide. 6
Cameron Ashia (for Redmond 62) - Direct replacement in the left wing/wing-back role. Almost pulled off a repeat of his goal against Leicester but saw his strike come back off the post. 7
Jay Sway (for Sorensen 76) - Played his preferred right-back role. Stopped a storming Savinho run into the box soon after coming on, turning on the afterburners to get back and block his attempted cutback. Teed up Ashia to hit the post late on. 7
Bojan Radulovic (for Charles 76) - Saw out the game at centre-forward. 6
Alfie May (for Kasumu 84) - Took over from Wiles, who dropped back into a deeper midfield role. n/a
Unused substitutes: Owen Goodman, Joe Low, Ryan Ledson, Joe Taylor.
