Huddersfield Town player ratings from dismal 3-2 defeat at Northampton
Despite scoring two late goals, it's three defeats in three matches for Michael Duff's side
Jacob Chapman - 4
Denied both Tom Eaves and Cameron McGeehan in a goal line scramble before being fouled. Beaten at full stretch by Sam Hoskins’ wonderful outside of the foot, half volley. Left in a one-on-one situation with Eaves tearing down on goal, with the striker slotting it past him, could have done better. Conceded from distance once more, as Liam Shaw found the bottom corner.
Matty Pearson - 3
Struggled on the right of Town’s defence with Tariqe Fosu running at him. Beaten in the air by Eaves too often, and turned inside out by Liam Shaw for Northampton’s third. Looked as though he would be better in the middle of the defence rather than on the right when Town are on the ball.
Radinio Balker - 3
At the centre of Town’s back three. Beaten in the air, leading to Northampton’s first. Shrugged to floor by Eaves who went through to slot it past Chapman on the second. Appeared to lose confidence as the game went on, making some of the simple stuff look difficult.
Brodie Spencer - 4
Not very convincing at left centre back or left back. Didn’t look comfortable when on the back foot, caught out positionally more than once.
Lasse Sorensen - 4
Multiple opportunities to deliver the ball into the box. Didn’t manage to find a team mate with any of them in the first half. Persistent with his efforts on the right, which started to pay off as the game got into the later stages.
Joe Hodge - 3
Bundles of energy, just not always helpful. Seemed to be more of a case of looking busy rather than being busy. Replaced at half-time.
Jonathan Hogg - 5
Started proactively, progressing Town through the thirds. Ended up operating deeper as the game went on, with his passing changing from getting Town forward to shifting side to side. Struck a sumptuous volley to drag Town to a single goal deficit.
Ben Wiles - 3
Played through the middle in the first half, with little success. Shifted to the left of a midfield four in the second half but still unable to make any sort of impact. Set-pieces were poor.
Ruben Roosken - 4
Frustrating. Picked up some great areas down Town’s left but every single cross into the box, whether high, low, or somewhere in between, was met by a Northampton defender or into the arms on Nik Tzanev. Went down holding his right knee in the first half but was alright to continue until coming off at the break.
Dion Charles - 4
Clearly hungry to make an impact. Unfortunately, had more to do off the ball for Town than on it. Carried the ball forward when he had the chance but didn’t even come near to being able to get a shot on goal. Taken off after 60 minutes.
Bojan Radulovic - 3
Little to no impact. Held up the ball occasionally but sometimes it takes one to many touches to release it. Picked it up a bit later on, but too little, too late. Had a shot in the last five minutes that was kept out by Tzanev, a massive moment missed.
Substitutes
Callum Marshall (for Hodge 45) - Committed to making a difference. Plenty of running, finding pockets of space on the right. Slipped a well weighted pass in for Herbie Kane to pull one back for Town. Changed the game for Town. 7
Herbie Kane (for Roosken 45) - Had all the time in the world when the ball fell for him at the back post off a corner, his shot could not have been any more sliced. Tucked away his shot beyond Tzanev to give Town a glimmer of hope. 5
Rhys Healey (for Charles 61) - Not enough impact. Didn’t get the ball in valuable enough areas to be dangerous. 5
Antony Evans (for Wiles 78) - Brought energy to the midfield when needed but the game was essentially done by then. 5
Josh Ruffels (for Balker 78) - Came on as part of Town’s late push. 5
Unused substitutes: Lee Nicholls, Ollie Turton.
