Huddersfield Town player ratings as winning start goes on against Stevenage
Josh Koroma and Ben Wiles got the goals but Lasse Sorensen was the star, claiming both assists in a 2-1 win
Lee Nicholls - 6
Was given only routine saves to make as Stevenage failed to make the most of their chances, which they only really started to create in the second half. Received his standard issue booking for timewasting late on. No chance with Harvey White’s late penalty (which honestly, we’re not sure why it was awarded).
Tom Lees - 8
Got forward well when opportunities presented themselves. Put a header narrowly wide off a set piece in the first half. Good reactions to cut out a potentially dangerous ball across the back line, getting a diving header back to Nicholls instead, and stopped a ball to the back post in stoppage time that would otherwise have given an easy finish.
Michal Helik - 7
Played some wonderful forward balls over the top to find runners and get attacks going, with one for Ben Wiles especially dangerous.
Brodie Spencer - 5
Unnecessarily errant with a few of his passes, but got away with it. Poor start to the second half as Stevenage unleashed their first decent attacks of the game, but finished it a bit better.
Lasse Sorensen - 9
Another two assists for the wing-back, with his early ball in towards the near post met by Josh Koroma. Gave Dan Butler the absolute run around up the Town right, leading to the Stevenage man getting booked midway through the first half. Great cutback for Ben Wiles to double Town’s lead early in the second half just as Stevenage were starting to get back into the game.
Antony Evans - 6
Received an early booking for a for a foul. Made a couple of promising set piece deliveries, and covered well for Sorensen’s voyages forward on a few occasions, but generally muted performance overall.
Jonathan Hogg - 6
Largely bypassed in the first half as Town attacked up the wings and Stevenage played it long, but had more to do after the break as the visitors changed shape and did it well enough, especially as the game descended into scrappiness in the late stages.
Ben Wiles - 7
Struggled to find his touch with his passing and shooting in the opening stages of the game, dragging the first shot of the game well wide and giving it away a couple of times. Improved from there and constantly made the right runs. Had an attempt to curl it over the keeper pushed up in the air and then cleared off the line by a defender. Did brilliantly to get back and stop a dangerous-looking Stevenage counter off a Town corner just before half time. Confident finish to make it 2-0 after getting himself free right in the middle of the penalty box.
Mickel Miller - 8
Another hard-working performance from the wing-back, who was particularly sharp to react to losses of possession or bad opposition touches that offered the chance to win the ball back quickly. Subbed off midway through the second half having put in a big end-to-end shift.
Danny Ward - 6
In for Rhys Healey in the only change from last Saturday’s victory at Peterborough. Had a flick-on from an Evans corner turned onto the post eight minutes in. Good physicality to move the Stevenage players around at his leisure at times. Blazed a good chance well over the bar off a Koroma cross early in the second half. Useful in the build-up, however, doing his part to get Town into attacking positions.
Josh Koroma - 7
A little frustrating early doors but made up for it by opening the scoring with a diving header off Sorensen’s lovely cross - the first headed goal he has scored since coming to Town in 2019 (couldn’t tell you if he ever got one for Leyton Orient). Looked to be enjoying himself after that and continued to cause problems for Stevenage.
Substitutes
Jaheim Headley (for Miller 64) - Looked to pick up where he left off with his encouraging performance in midweek. Entered into a running physical battle with Jordan Roberts. 6
Herbie Kane (for Evans 65)- Brought fresh legs into the midfield. The man you want for a scrappy finale. 6
Callum Marshall (for Koroma 65) - Put himself about to make things difficult for Stevenage in the late stages. Showed some nice touches in moves that came to nothing, and got back to make a couple of decent tackles. 6
Kian Harratt (for Ward 78) - A late and unnoteworthy cameo. n/a
David Kasumu (for Wiles 79) - Helped make sure the game petered out into a Town victory. n/a
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Matty Pearson.
