Huddersfield Town player ratings from shockingly awful performance at Charlton
The Terriers went a goal down inside a minute and by the hour it was 4-0 thanks to a series of shocking performances all over the field
Lee Nicholls - 7
Powerless on all the first three well-placed goals and unlucky to have an own goal against his name after a Gregg Docherty effort hit the bar and went in off his back. Saved well from a powerful Greg Docherty strike just after the half hour, and again to deny Tyreece Campbell and Luke Berry shortly after the interval. Kicking not the best but not like he had loads to aim for most of the time. Says a lot the goalkeeper was Town’s best player by a mile in such a heavy defeat.
Ollie Turton - 3
Had the option to head a long ball safely back to Lee Nicholls on Charlton’s second goal, but instead headed it blindly forward to allow the opposition a chance to quickly attack the space he had left vacant. Struggled against Campbell’s rapid pace and running in general up that side, back off from him to let him in the score Charlton’s third.
Matty Pearson - 2
Several yards off the pace of play throughout. Slipped and was consequently unable to stop the cross from which Matty Godden scored the early opener. Wayward and inaccurate on the ball throughout the first half, in common with many of his teammates. Better in that regard after the break but continued to struggle with his defensive duties.
Radinio Balker - 2
As with Pearson, we appreciate he’s just back from injury and may not be entirely sharp, but really poor even taking that into account. Constantly gave the ball away in dangerous areas, including on the opening goal, sometimes by being unnecessarily over-elaborate and out of sync with teammates who expected him to keep things simpler.
Brodie Spencer - 5
Shifted over to left-back form the start. Sold an absolutely rum misdirected pass he couldn’t get to by Balker as Charlton raced into the lead. Made numerous well-timed firm sliding challenges to repel attacks up his side, with the bulk of the worst issues coming on the other flank. Finished the game at centre-back after Balker’s departure at 4-0.

Ben Wiles - 2
Appeared to have been given something of a free role but did nothing with it.
Joe Hodge - 3
Unable to react quickly enough to Turton’s unexpected forward header on the second goal, and generally overfaced by Charlton’s rapid attacks. Sacrificed for Jonathan Hogg at half time.
Antony Evans - 2
Another player who looked well off the pace and too wasteful too often with the ball. Started mirroring Wiles in a 4-3-3 before dropping in alongside Hodge after it went 2-0. Misread a Joe Taylor cutback when he had the chance to pull one back midway though the first half, and continued in that vein thereafter, seemingly unable to find his feet whenever he got into a promising position.
Callum Marshall - 4
Barely in the game at all first half, despite his usual best efforts to be. Kept trying but rarely had anything to play off.
Joe Taylor - 5
One of those games where you end up feeling sorry for the centre-forward at the top of an awful side. Did what he could but was trying to feed on scraps and did well to get even what little he did. Sparked an injury scare midway through the first half but thankfully able to continue.
Ruben Roosken - 3
Ditto from Marshall, only more so: barely involved in play at all before the break as Town struggled to get the ball forward in wide positions.
Substitutes
Jonathan Hogg (for Hodge 46) - Sent on to try and lend a more experienced head in front of the defence with the game already all but gone. Did help Town keep the ball better, for what little good that did. 5
Josh Ruffels (for Balker 61) - Went to left-back with Spencer taking over from Balker. 5
David Kasumu (for Evans 61) - Back from injury with the game well lost already. Showed a couple of nice touches in tight spaces and covered the ground well. 6
Josh Koroma (for Taylor 62) - Also back from injury, and had the same thankless task at centre-forward. 5
Tawanda Chirewa (for Roosken 76) - n/a
Unused substitutes: Jacob Chapman, Lasse Sorensen.
