Huddersfield Town player ratings from listless EFL Trophy defeat at Bolton
A late 90th own goal forced by Lasse Sorensen was much too little to late in a 3-1 defeat that dumped Town out of the EFL Trophy
Jacob Chapman - 5
No chance of reaching a well-placed header as Bolton took the lead. Had to go full stretch to pull off a pair of stops early in the second half and saved from a narrow angle on the hour. Made Szabi Schon look a right fool for attempting to lob him a few minutes later, plucking the ball out of midair. So a real shame that his unfortunate slip while clearing the ball handed Bolton their second goal, clearing straight at Collins with the ball effectively rebounding in. Blameless on the third as Bolton got in one-on-one.
Matty Pearson - 6
Had a penalty shout turned down just before the hour, then went off shortly afterwards. Fine.
Michal Helik - 4
Stepped out early to try and make challenges in midfield, not always getting it right with a couple of misjudgements of timing. Beaten in behind alongside Spencer for Bolton’s third goal.
Nigel Lonwijk - 5
Generally steady away but unclear whether he needed to put Chapman under pressure with a backpass that led to Bolton’s second goal
Brodie Spencer - 4
Started at right wing-back before switching to centre-back to take over from Pearson. Better in the latter role having had too little impact in attack bar one jaunt up the right that ended with an unfinished cutback. Didn’t pick up the run on Bolton’s third goal.
David Kasumu - 5
Usual hustle and bustle in midfield. Carried the ball forward well a couple of times in the very early going before just going tidy for much of the rest of the game.
Tom Iorpenda - 3
Looked to be hiding from the ball at times in the first half in an overall nervous-looking performance. Grew into the game slightly second half as Town started to have a proper go at trying to find an equaliser but not as sharp as he needed to be on the ball. Booked for a dive in the final seconds of the game.
Josh Ruffels - 4
Got in just over an hour on the left without a huge amount of incident, both for better and worse.
Danny Ward - 5
A late replacement for Jonathan Hogg, who pulled up injured in the warm-up, starting at number ten. Tested Luke Southwood with a shot towards the top corner. Fans clearly upset to see him subbed off rather than Radulovic.
Bojan Radulovic - 3
Not especially in the game first half. Looked unsure of himself, as he has recently. Clearly short on confidence to the point we’re starting to feel bad for these kinds of marks. Did play a part in the move that led to the late own goal for Town.
Josh Koroma - 5
Started up top, then took over from Ward at number 10 following his substitution. Decent work rate and had some bright moments but final pass and shot left something to be desired.
Substitutes
Lasse Sorensen (for Pearson 66) - Made his return from injury. Quickly got into the thick of it by forcing a save out of the keeper, then forced a consolation goal as his saved shot rebounded into the net off a defender. Dynamic showing. 7
Jaheim Headley (for Ruffels 66) - Carried the ball well and at first looked determined to make an impression having spent a long spell out of Michael Duff’s thoughts before just growing frustrated. 5
Freddie Ladapo (for Ward 66) - Won a couple of useful knockdowns and looked keen. Might have been released in on goal soon after coming on but was undersold by Koroma’s pass. Kept working away even at 3-0 down and got Town going on the way to their late consolation. 6
Ben Wiles (for Koroma 80) - The third and final man to play the number ten role, and unsurprisingly looked more at home than the two out-of-position players who had gone before him. n/a
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Ollie Turton.
