Huddersfield Town player ratings as Lincoln seen off in Vertu Trophy
Joe Taylor and Murray Wallace scored from set pieces as the Terriers claimed their first clean sheet in 11 games
Lee Nicholls - 7
Controlled the box, other than one corner where he hit the deck under little pressure and needed Murray Wallace to clear it off the line. Nearly every shot went straight at him but dealt with them as required. Made a save from an awkward skidding shot to the bottom corner and made sure it went round the post.
Lasse Sorensen - 6
One of three players to return to his old stomping grounds, alongside Sean Roughan and Joe Taylor. Defensively solid enough. Should have done better with an injury-time chance that he put straight at the keeper.
Joe Low - 7
Really composed and assured performance, which was good to see. Played some good long balls forward in the opening stages of the game.
Murray Wallace - 8
Got his first outing since the trip to Harrogate in the group stage in September. Put a header over the bar at one end then cleared a corner ball off the line at the other midway through the first half. Got an assist as Town went ahead early in the second half, helping Alfie May’s header on to Taylor at the back post. Textbook header to score Town’s late second from Ruben Roosken’s corner.
Sean Roughan - 8
Excellent showing at left-back: dealt well with Reeco Hackett, played the ball forward ambitiously and accurately, and looked a threat with his set pieces. Tested the keeper with a direct free kick in the first half and crossed superbly from a free kick just after the break to help make Taylor’s goal.
Ben Wiles - 7
Caused some problems with his presence in the number 10 position on a few Town attacks, but generally quiet before the break. More and more involved in the attack as the game went on and Town had more opportunity to play on the counter-attack, often serving as the link man in the move before getting into the box. Set up that late Sorensen chance.
Marcus Harness - 7
Really good first half both on and off the ball, as we have generally seen from him in that central midfield role..
David Kasumu - 6
Made his first appearance since mid-October. Showed a few signs of rustiness first half, but that’s to be expected in his first game back and playing in this shape for the first time. Booked for a cynical foul on the hour and lucky not to get another yellow card ten minutes later for a late tackle — taken off immediately afterwards.
Cameron Ashia - 6
Provided energy and width. Good ball-carrier to get Town forward and win a foul to help relieve some pressure.
Joe Taylor - 7
Got in for a couple of chances in the first half and went close with a side-footed poke to the bottom corner that Zach Jeacock did well to keep out. Broke the deadlock after getting free on a set piece that came back across the six yard box.
Alfie May - 7
Busy performance as usual. Won the back-post header from Roughan’s delivery as the Terriers got the opener. Had a double effort well saved twice after racing onto an underhit backpass.
