Huddersfield Town player ratings as victory delivered at Stevenage
Callum Marshall opened the scoring in rapid fashion, Nigel Lonwijk atoned for a mistake on the equaliser by heading the Terriers back in front for a 2-1 win
You’ll find our five conclusions on this game here.
Lee Nicholls - 7
Really came into his own in the final 20 minutes as Stevenage pushed for an equaliser, pulling off a couple of necessary saves and commanding his box from set pieces.
Brodie Spencer - 7
Had a few untidy moments on the ball here and there but generally handled what he needed to capably, especially in the final few minutes.
Nigel Lonwijk - 7
Slipped as the crucial moment after looking to have dealt with a forward ball from Stevenage, allowing Brandon Hanlan in to make it 1-1 — but made up for it by heading home his first goal for the club midway through the first half. Seemed to be on ‘no nonsense’ instructions after the break having looked a tad uncomfortable with a couple more long balls, and played his part well in the middle of the back three. Didn’t put a foot wrong second half.
Josh Ruffels - 7
The left-sided centre-back in the back three. Took a bit of a beating with footballs to the face and studs on the toes, but shook it all off and put in a dependable performance.
Ollie Turton - 6
A surprise selection at wing-back with Lasse Sorensen benched. Finished the game on the other side after Ruben Roosken was rested for the final stretch. Did both jobs well.
Joe Hodge - 6
Had to grow into the game but generally did so from the base of the Town midfield. Could be a bit more committed on his 50/50 challenges at times. Got nothing from the referee when on the ball. Clearly has quality, just want to see him involved a bit more sometimes.
Antony Evans - 8
Claimed his fourth assist in his last eight appearances with a peach of a corner ball delivery for Lonwijk. Unlucky not to get another just before the hour after Callum Marshall was denied by an excellent save. All round good midfield performance.
Ruben Roosken - 8
Back into the starting line-up after his injury, and quick to claim his first assist for the club by putting in the low cross that Marshall put home. Had his man’s number up the Town left side — very encouraging performance.
Tawanda Chirewa - 6
Started at number 10, just behind the front two. Did lots of little things well both on and off the ball, but could have been a little snappier with his decisions at times.
Josh Koroma - 5
Had a low strike well saved a few minutes after Town took their early lead. That was part of a good first 20 minutes or so that also included since nice little exchanges with Marshall, but blew hot and cold thereafter.
Callum Marshall - 8
Got Town off the mark just three minutes in by finishing Roosken’s cross to the near post. Twice went close in the second half, only to see Murphy Cooper brilliantly save his flick-on and then minutes later hitting the post from a difficult angle around rounding the keeper.
Substitutes
Jonathan Hogg (for Chirewa 59) - Went alongside Hodge with Evans pushing forward. Had to take a yellow card after being dispossessed. 6
Joe Taylor (for Koroma 73) - Back from his lay-off, which is good news, isn’t it? 5
Lasse Sorensen (for Roosken 73) - New legs for the right flank. Presumably benched with that in mind knowing Roosken would be unable to complete the 90. 6
Ben Wiles (for Evans 82) - Went to the left of what was by now a more or less flat central midfield three. n/a
Unused substitutes: Francis Hurl, Dion Charles, Freddie Ladapo.
