Huddersfield Town player ratings from eventful win over ten-man Charlton
Marks out of ten from a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Matty Pearson and David Kasumu
Jacob Chapman - 8
Kept his composure well when dealing with backpasses and balls over the top. Sent the wrong way by Matty Godden’s penalty. A bit fortunate that Gassan Ahadme couldn’t finish off a corner that went over his the keeper’s head late on. Absolutely sensational last-second intervention to stop Charlton scoring off a quickly-taken free kick, diving at an attacker’s feet and getting all of the ball — brilliant awareness and earned Town two points with that alone.
Matty Pearson - 7
Scored a really difficult header from a Mickel Miller corner that was slightly behind him, and under heavy pressure to boot — did really well to get it in off the underside of the bar. Hit the bar again just five minutes later off another Miller set piece, but this time it cannoned back out. Had to depart just after the half hour with what looked like a foot or ankle injury picked up while defending a long throw.
Tom Lees - 7
Kept his place in the middle of the back three despite Michal Helik’s return from injury. Moved across to the right of the back three after Pearson went off injured. Did well in both roles.
Nigel Lonwijk - 6
Started well and dealt with numerous long balls over the top. Was beaten by Miles Leaburn on the way to Charlton’s penalty, and again early in the second half, and looked a bit rattled for a spell thereafter, but got back into it and finished strongly.
Brodie Spencer - 4
Committed a slightly needless late tackle to concede the penalty from which Charlton equalised. Needs to learn to use better judgement on when to go in with a challenge and when it’s better to stand his man up.
Herbie Kane - 7
Steady away as ever for much of the game. Set up Kasumu’s goal with a lovely Cruyff turn to create space on the edge of the box. Generally excellent for the final 30 minutes, both relieving the pressure and creating forward momentum to get the ball into the Charlton third.
David Kasumu - 8
Got back to cover superbly on a couple of threatening Charlton breaks. Hard to beat as ever, and took his goal magnificently, finishing Herbie Kane’s square ball first time with his left foot from just outside the box for his third of the season.
Mickel Miller - 7
Started brilliantly, causing problems up the left and putting two superbly-delivered set pieces onto Pearson’s head, including the opening goal — hard to overlook that. Grew a bit sloppier in the second half with a few misplaced passes and crosses. Incurred Michael Duff’s considerable fury for getting into a crossing position but then putting the ball out so Charlton’s Miles Leaburn could receive treatment for an injury.
Ben Wiles - 7
Very quiet first half before becoming much more prominent just before the hour and putting himself at the centre of all Town’s more promising attacks. Smart work to go back to Kane rather than have a pop on the way to Kasumu’s goal. Should have done better after being put in one on one with the keeper late on, but was influential overall.
Rhys Healey - 5
Made his first league start since the opening day. Looked sharp and keen to get onto loose balls and lost causes, but sadly pulled up with what looked like another hamstring injury right at the end of the first half.
Josh Koroma - 4
In the starting line-up for the first time since September. Didn’t seem switched both in and out of possession for the first half hour or so and needing reminding a couple of times to get moving. Grew into the game a bit from there and helped Town build pressure on Charlton after a woeful team start to the second half.
Substitutes
Michal Helik (for Pearson 33) - Took over in the middle of the back three and looked rusty. Had an absolutely ludicrous foul given against him and even more ridiculously went in the book. Lucky his missed header on a Charlton cross wasn’t punished by Miles Leaburn at 2-1, and that another missed header that allowed a late knockdown came to nothing. 5
Bojan Radulovic (for Healey 45+4) - Struggled to form a relationship with Marshall despite their having played together numerous times now. Missed a set piece chance that curled to him at the back post. Looks short on confidence. 4
Callum Marshall (for Koroma 64) - Played in Wiles for a chance that should have made it 3-1. Had a late shot saved, but probably should have moved it on to a teammate instead of going alone. Need to play with his head up a bit more when on the ball. 4
Ollie Turton (for Spencer 64) - Could have been better with blocking crosses at times, but overall fine. 6
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Jonathan Hogg, Tom Iorpenda.
