Huddersfield Town player ratings as Manchester United U21 blown away
The Terriers claimed a 4-1 victory to pass through to the next round of the EFL Trophy with goals from Ben Wiles, Rhys Healey, David Kasumu and Tom Lees
Jacob Chapman - 6
Not much to do in the first half. Didn’t have much chance of keeping out Victor Musa’s fancy flick to level the scoring, which caught everyone off guard. Barely had another save to make.
Matty Pearson - 7
Managed to play a silky first time ball on the volley in the same minute that he spooned the ball high and out of play. That’s why we love you Matty P. Performed well and showed great determination, as ever.
Michal Helik - 6
First start since returning from injury. Importantly won the ball with a strong challenge before Town got the opener. Duff will be glad to have him back available and with some minutes in his legs.
Nigel Lonwijk - 6
Caught in a bit of a muddle for United’s equaliser - Ethan Ennis turned inside and left him sat on the turf. Other than that was pretty decent. Won some credit back for his second half performance where he didn’t put a foot wrong.
Ollie Turton - 7
Fantastic delivery and was wise to slide the ball back to Wiles on the edge for Town’s opening goal. Sold his man a dummy before releasing Wiles again to cross for Healey to head home. Should have probably lofted it towards Healey instead of blazing his half-volley over the bar when he found himself in the box.
Herbie Kane - 6
Attempted to get Town moving forward but would often get a booting from behind before have the opportunity to. Began to thrive in the second half when Town realised they could pass it through United’s midfield. Got cautioned for giving an opponent a big hug to halt a United counter attack.
Tom Iorpenda - N/A
Latched onto a Pearson long ball to whip it across the six-yard box early on. Unfortunately picked up a knock after 20 minutes forcing him to depart.
Mickel Miller - 7
Had a low shot saved after 17 seconds. Should have had a big ‘A’ next to his name for the cross he put in for Bojan. Got spun in the build up for United’s equaliser. Mixed service into the box all evening, sometimes great. Brought down in the box where there was definite contact - referee punished him for handball - ought to have been a penalty! Got a yellow for taking a swipe at the heels.
Ben Wiles - 8
Celebrations before the ball hit the net for his goal - that’s how sweet he struck it! Fired a great ball towards Healey from the wing for the striker to nod into the net. Unselfishly gave it back to Kasumu to get his second assist. Didn’t have the prettiest evening and set piece deliveries not great, but his goal and assists were all superb. Looked shattered by the end.
Bojan Radulovic - 4
Linked the ball up at times, winning a couple headers here and there. Miller put it on a plate for on for him from the left and sadly Bojan didn’t even touch his dinner, never mind finish it.
Rhys Healey - 7
Got a kicking from United’s kids in the first half. Couldn’t beat the wall with a free-kick from about 30 yards. Put Town back ahead with a bullet header at the near post. Stretched United in the second half, making some lovely darting runs down the left. Got his reward for it.
Substitutes
David Kasumu (for Iorpenda 20) - His usual combative performance. Handed out a few receipts for what United had been doing to his teammates. Got booked after one too many. Nice bit of play between him and Wiles before he scored Town’s third. 7
Tom Lees (for Helik 66) - Steady away. What we have come to expect from him. Leapt up to snatch a goal in the closing moments with a towering header. 7
Danny Ward (for Radulovic 66) - Brought the needed energy that the front line needed - no coincidence that Town scored moments after his introduction. Must score when Wiles put him one on one but his first touch was horrific and finish even worse. 6
Freddie Ladapo (for Healey 73) - Had a slow start after coming on. Didn’t show much until finally breaking into a sprint a couple of times in the final minutes. Not hungry enough for a man that can’t nail down a regular place in the squad. 4
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Francis Hurl, Jaheim Headley.
