Huddersfield Town player ratings from professional win over Wigan Athletic
Ollie Turton's first ever goal for the club secured a 1-0 win over a defensively solid Wigan side to make it eight without defeat in the league
Jacob Chapman - 6
Didn’t look wholly convincing on a couple of corners that were curled right across the face of his goal. Twice saved well low down in the first half.
Tom Lees - 7
Played the second half alongside Kane in midfield off the ball as Michael Duff tired to get more men forward in the press. Had a goal ruled out late on with the ball having already curled straight out from a corner. Made a crucial interception on a late Wigan move.
Michal Helik - 6
Calm and steady presence in the middle of the back three. Stepped out well to close down midfielders whenever Wigan played up to halfway in the second half.
Nigel Lonwijk - 6
Misread a ball over the top early in the game that led to Wigan forcing Chapman into a save. Did half a job a few times in the first half, either making a poor decision then making up for it or making a good one then not following through on it.
Ollie Turton - 8
Scored his first ever competitive goal for the club, much to the delight of his teammates — lovely moment. Worked hard at the back and did some solid work to help defend set pieces.
Herbie Kane - 7
Had a hard time finding the moments of quality he wants to produce against a very deep Wigan defence, but kept trying and did get a couple of useful balls in to release Wiles in the first half and Marshall in the second.
David Kasumu - 7
Was pushed up into an attacking midfield role off the ball at the break to try and intensify the pressure on the Wigan defence. Great work to keep the ball alive and get around the Wigan defence to set up Turton’s goal.
Josh Koroma - 5
A surprise selection at left wing-back. Curled a shot narrowly off target and hit the post behind the goal midway through the first half. Seemed to have Toby Sibbick’s number with his running but didn’t make the most of it. Moved up top just after the hour when Danny Ward was withdrawn, then to the left wing late on.
Ben Wiles - 6
Hit the outside of the post with a free kick after being fouled right on the edge of the box. Got the ball caught under his feet when he had a chance late on, then had a penalty shout correctly turned down - clear dive. Good, brave block on a powerful late Scott Smith strike off a set piece, then took a kick to the arm off the next one as he again put himself in harm’s way to defend the goal.
Callum Marshall - 6
Massive effort as usual. Constantly looked to limit Wigan’s passing options out from the back, and forced the corner from which Town took the lead.
Danny Ward - 6
Looked up for it in the first half hour and caused the Wigan defence some problems with his determined running both on and off the ball. Seemed to tire as the half wore on, but kept putting in a good shift.
Substitutes
Josh Ruffels (for Ward 63) - Took over from Koroma at wing-back. Tested the keeper with a long-range effort that needed a good save to keep out. 6
Freddie Ladapo (for Marshall 72) - Another pretty underwhelming display from the bench. Has actually played worse for Town but took a lot of stick from the home fans. 4
Jonathan Hogg (for Kane 82) - Brought fresh bite to the midfield for the closing minutes. 6
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Matty Pearson, Brodie Spencer, Bojan Radulovic.
