Huddersfield Town player ratings as Herbie Kane volley wins day at Wycombe
Michael Duff's side had to dig in for most of the game after Kane's brilliantly-struck goal, but stood firm to see out a 1-0 win
Jacob Chapman - 8
Had to be very sure of himself on an incredibly slippery surface, and was. Came off his line really well on numerous occasions, including to make a scrambled triple save early on in the second half.
Matty Pearson - 9
Excellent right from the very first minute after coming in for the absent Michal Helik, who missed out through illness. There to clear what felt like every cross into the box and won some important challenges on the handful of occasions Wycombe used their pace to get in behind. Brilliant defensive performance in a side full of them.
Tom Lees - 8
Skippered the side from the heart of the defence. Stood solid to help limit Wycombe to as few chances a possible. Took a yellow card for a cynical foul in the second half.
Brodie Spencer - 8
Constantly switched between centre-back and left-back pretty comfortably in Town’s fluid shape for the first half. Dug in really really well and dominated in the air as an out-and-out centre-back for a spell then going off injured.
Ollie Turton - 8
Good game at right-back and particularly good in the air, winning more than his share of headers under pressure.
Ben Wiles - 7
Like his teammates, put in a respectable hard-working performance. Offered a threat on set pieces, including for the goal.
Joe Hodge - 7
Played a lovely through ball in the opening stages to release Callum Marshall, but sadly came to nothing. Very tidy and made himself available well, then
Herbie Kane - 8
Brilliant hit as he volleyed home from a corner to give Town the lead after the keeper’s punch fell nicely for him.
Josh Koroma - 5
Bit sloppy on the ball and gave it away a few times in the early going, but did provide a good cross for Marshall that resulted in a decent effort on goal and the corner Town scored from. Had a man marking job to do on Fred Onyedinma off the ball, making him more wing-back than winger, and did it well enough first half but looked a bit overwhelmed after the break.
Callum Marshall - 6
Made plenty of good runs that Town weren’t always able to make best use of. Tested the keeper with a first-time effort on the quarter-hour, with Kane scoring from the resulting corner. Had to do a lot of chasing around after the break, which thankfully he’s only too happy to do. Indefatigable.
Bojan Radulovic - 5
Didn’t have any chances on goal to speak of but worked hard, which in this kind of game is fine. No criticism, just a tough game for a centre-forward when protecting the lead comes first.
Substitutes
Antony Evans (for Hodge 64) - Fresh legs for the midfield. Put himself about well and usually the man driving Town forward whenever they tried to go in search of a second goal. Professional job in injury time to see out the seconds. 7
Josh Ruffels (for Koroma 64) - Went on to give Town a clear-cut back five to try and protect their lead, but still took his opportunities to get forward to try and killt eh game off. 7
Radinio Balker (for Spencer 71) - Back from his long injury lay-off for his first competitive minutes since March last year. Covered his side of the pitch really really well. 8
Jonathan Hogg (for Wiles 75) - Another back from injury. Went in the book for dissent just after coming on, which wasn’t ideal, but he worked around it.. Patrolled around in front of the rest of the midfield in the press, effectively limiting Wycombe’s time on the ball. Won some interceptions to disrupt play. 7
Freddie Ladapo (for Radulovic 75) - Saw out the running and chasing brief late on. 5
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Conor Falls.
