Huddersfield Town player ratings as Morecambe seen off in Carabao Cup
Goals from Jaheim Headley, Callum Marshall and Danny Ward against League Two opposition put the Terriers into the second round draw
Chris Maxwell - 6
Didn’t face a single shot on his goal until the 56th minute, with that Jordan Slew effort flying over the bar. Did have to come about 30 yards off his line to mop up at one point. We presume he had a lovely day out in the rain besides that.
Matty Pearson - 7
Got a chance to impress after Tom Lees was preferred on the opening day and looked determined to make a good case for himself. Took the captain’s armband from Michal Helik at the break as the Pole departed.
Michal Helik - 6
Put a header off target from a Jaheim Headley corner early on. Very patient on the ball, waiting for the right moments to release the first pass in a Town move. Had very little to do otherwise and went off at the break to get Ollie Turton some minutes.
Brodie Spencer - 7
Enjoyed his license to turn into a supplementary attacking player with voyages up the right, at one point carrying it two-thirds the length of the pitch and then moments later shooting wide from 25 yards. In his element off the ball, winning the ball well on the floor and in the air.
Lasse Sorensen - 8
All energy and all-attack, as we have already come to expect, with his double-jaunt into the box in the opening seconds resulting in the opener. Fabulous early ball in for Callaum Marshall to double the lead.
Tom Iorpenda - 8
Made himself a handful for the Morecambe midfield. Forced the Morecambe keeper into a save from distance, and had an appeal for a penalty turned down after cutting in off a good run up the right to meet a smart Danny Ward ball. Lovely touch on him too. Became more and more influential as the game went on, winning challenges in midfield and always looking to play forward, which he did really well.
David Kasumu - 6
In a similar boat to Pearson with Jonathan Hogg and Herbie Kane both competition for the number 6 role. Not a game for a defensive midfielder to shine, in truth, but did his job well, putting Slew off with a sliding tackle as he took Morecambe’s first shot of the game. Got more of a chance to play after Sorensen departed for Jonathan Hogg, giving Kasumu a more attacking role to play, and seemed to enjoy himself at wing-back.
Herbie Kane - 8
Brilliant ball over the top for Ward quarter of an hour in, with plenty more incisive passes and useful close control to follow, including one from which Josh Koroma hit the post. A real game-changer for Town on the ball with his incredible passing range.
Jaheim Headley - 8
Was in the right place at the right time to simply chest in the opener after Lasse Sorensen had a shot saved. Exactly how we thought he would be against lower-league opposition, confidently beating his man throughout to pose an attacking threat. Close to claiming an assist just after the break, but Ward couldn’t quite get to his ball across the face of goal.
Danny Ward - 7
Did well to get to that wonderful Kane pass int he early going, and looked like he should have been awarded a penalty as Jamie Stott brought him down, but the referee gave a goal kick. Cool finish on his unfavoured right foot to score Town’s third from close range shortly before half time. Had another penalty shout turned down after seeming to be hauled down early in the second half while trying to get onto a Iorpenda cross.
Callum Marshall - 8
In for his Town debut after arriving on loan from West Ham on Friday. Quickly earned the respect of the crowd by refusing to stay down even after some hefty challenges. Nippy and enthusiastic, alert to loose balls and bad touches from the opposition, and willing to use his teammates. Opened his Town account by calmly waiting to see which way the keeper committed before finishing Sorensen’s cross, then created Town’s third by winning the ball at the touchline, driving inside and unselfishly passing to Ward when he would have been forgiven for shooting. Promising stuff.
Substitutes
Ollie Turton (for Helik 46) - Took over on the right of the back three with Pearson going central. Good minutes to get after missing a few pre-season games with a slight hamstring issue. 6
Ben Wiles (for Iorpenda 61) - Some nice little flicks but quieter than we’ve seen him lately - which is fine when you’re 3-0 up, to be honest. 6
Jonathan Hogg (for Sorensen 61) - Saw out the game in defensive midfield to save Sorensen’s legs for the weekend. 6
Kian Harratt (for Marshall 71) - Made himself available and put himself about. 6
Josh Koroma (for Ward 71) - Would have got clean through on goal had he not been fouled by Kayden Harrack, earning the Morecambe man a second yellow card. Agonisingly close to a goal with his late left-footed strike coming off the post, and wasted a very presentable one-on-one with the keeper that he should have put away. 6
Unused substitutes: Lee Nicholls, Mickel Miller, Antony Evans, Rhys Healey.
