Huddersfield Town player ratings after late drama in defeat to Hull City
Jack Rudoni looked to have rescued a point for Town in injury time but the visitors hit back moments later to take the three points
Lee Nicholls - 6
Was able to get a hand to Jacob Greaves’ early strike but not sufficiently enough to keep it out. A virtual spectator for much of the rest of the game aside from a one-on-one that Jaden Philogene put against the post. Powerless on the late winner.
Matty Pearson - 4
A rare off day for the defender. Rather rushed and inaccurate on the ball repeatedly throughout the game, especially in the first half, causing moves to break down and giving Hull the chance to attack.
Radinio Balker - 7
Another good outing from the Dutchman, exhibited some very useful raking long passing play when looking for Sorba Thomas out on the left.
Tom Lees - 6
A bit ponderous on the ball for the crowd’s tastes at times, but did his work off the ball capably and unfussily.
Brodie Spencer - 6
As with Pearson on the other side, was not given the license to get forward either on or off the ball, perhaps mindful of the considerable counter-attacking threat Hull pose from out wide, and especially through Jaden Philogene.
Jonathan Hogg - 4
Back into the side after being rotated in midweek, but it proved not to be the game for him after Hull took the lead so early, and was consequently part of a midfield that looked laboured on the ball. Proved unsuitable to being played through on the day with too much of his passing coming off sloppy. A bit better after the break with more passing options available ahead of him and out wide.
Alex Matos - 5
Needed to do better both with his tackle on Jaden Philogene on the edge of the box form which Hull won an early corner, and then again on his headed clearance from the resulting corner as the visitors took the lead. A bit prone to looking backwards throughout the first half, but sparked into life for what little time he had on the pitch after the break and almost forced another deflected goal.
Jack Rudoni - 5
Picked up an early yellow card that left him on a tightrope for the rest of the game, but continued to do his defensive work capably. A lot of the right ideas on the ball but couldn’t quite put them into practice with his execution just not quite right until his well-struck injury time equaliser. Was beaten to the ball by Greaves as he scored his second goal to leave Town empty-handed
Ben Wiles - 5
Had Town’s only real effort of the first half with his long-range strike forcing Ryan Allsop into a good save. Taken off early in the second half in a bid to bring new ideas into midfield.
Sorba Thomas - 7
Looked by far the Town player most likely to make something happen with some good involvement in passing moves and solid work in the press, but kept overhitting his crosses both from set pieces and open play. Put a deflected effort onto the post as Town pushed for an equaliser.
Josh Koroma - 5
Wasn’t given a lot to work with with Town struggling to get through the lines. Rushed what opportunities he did have off target then was taken off to give Delano Burgzorg a go early in the second half.
Substitutes
David Kasumu (for Wiles 56) - Brought a little bit of extra zip and better movement into the midfield. 6
Delano Burgzorg (for Koroma 56) - Offered a lot more physical presence with his back to goal but took a few goes to get his eye in with his shooting. Good work to create the Thomas chance that hit the post. 6
Brahima Diarra (for Matos 56) - Tried to offer himself for little flicks and passes. Worked hard to give Hull less time on the ball and put Town back on the attack. Finished the game on the right wing after a late change of shape. Should have done better to stop Jaden Philogene going one-on-one with Nicholls in injury time, but then did really well to set up Rudoni’s equaliser moments later. 6
Danny Ward (for Hogg 76) - Sent on to partner Burgzorg as Jon Worthington switched to a 4-4-2 that quickly become a largely shapeless bid to get everyone forward. n/a
Substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Yuta Nakayama, Ben Jackson, Pat Jones, Bojan Radulovic.
