Huddersfield Town player ratings from opening day win at Peterborough
Goals from Antony Evans and Ben Wiles were enough for Michael Duff's side to make a winning start to the League One season
Lee Nicholls - 7
Extremely assured showing, as we have come to expect. Didn’t have many difficult saves to make first half but that was partly down to his getting his positioning right in the first place. Wasn’t caught out by Peterborough’s attempts to beat him unexpectedly at the near post.
Tom Lees - 7
As always, composed and calm both on and off the ball, and even got forward to join the attack from time to time.
Michal Helik - 7
Left with more one-on-ones with players running straight at or past him than we might ideally like, which obviously isn’t his fault. No issue at all once Town were able to stop that from happening. Had a goal disallowed off a short corner for an offside.
Brodie Spencer - 7
Slightly unconvincing in the opening minutes but absolutely solid after that, cutting out balls across the box with good reading and working to stop a dangerous-looking Peterborough from making the most of their counter-attacks up their right wing. Lucky to get away with conceding the ball cheaply to allow Peterborough to attack 14 minutes from time.
Lasse Sorensen - 7
Made all the right runs at the right times to help the Town attack, but just as good off the ball, timing his pressing well - a trend across the whole side, to be fair.
Antony Evans - 8
Showed some excellent touches and promising passes, particularly when looking to send Sorensen free up the right. Got a touch of good fortune with his goal, which took a pretty hefty deflection, but he had earned it with his impressively all-action performance. Looked understandably leggy from around 20 minutes into the second half having given an awful lot both on and off the ball.
Jonathan Hogg - 8
Really effective as Town’s holding midfield player, with multiple tackles and interceptions to stop Peterborough from building the play. Drove the press really well, most notably, settling the midfield line appropriately to make sure Town had enough numbers forward to make it work. Particularly excellent second half
Ben Wiles - 7
Had a bit of a strange first 20 minutes or so with some really positive work on the ball mixed in with some of the basics going wrong. Grew into the first half from there, however, and played a big hand in setting up Evans’ opener before scoring a deflected second. Less effective as the game wore on, but still did his part in some attacking moves and, as with the rest of the team, kept shape well to limit Peterborough’s effectiveness.
Mickel Miller - 7
Gave away some soft fouls in the opening stages of the game, but can’t fault his work rate. Had a job on his hands dealing with Kwame Poku on the Peterborough right, but was able to turn on the jet engines to get back and make sure he wasn’t caught out. Didn’t always make the right decisions in attack but overall looked a threat.
Rhys Healey - 7
Unable to get a shot off on a difficult early half-chance created by Josh Koroma, but soon after gave Jed Steer a scare by chasing him down and forcing a corner. Went close with a near-post flick-on off Miller’s cross that Steer did well to turn around the post. Remains the Town player we would least like to mark — full of little niggly digs and physical challenges, which made him an effective target man on this occasion even if his chances were limited.
Josh Koroma - 7
Forced Town’s first really dangerous-looking opening with good work to win the ball close to the Peterborough box. Retained the ball well when Town needed a bit of hold-up work and posed his man some issues, even if all his efforts proved unsuccessful. Did a lot of the right stuff and just needed a better chance to finish.
