Huddersfield Town players who could gain a new lease of life under Lee Grant
Last season ended disappointingly for almost everyone in the Terriers squad — might the summer break have done them some good?
Even with Huddersfield Town rebuilding half their squad, there are still several players left over from last season who look to have a big part to play under Lee Grant.
Whether it’s through the restorative effects of the summer break, returns to fitness, or a new set of tactical instructions, they could play their way into good form or find their feet once the new campaign gets underway.
Here’s why and how that could happen — and what they need to do to make sure it does.
Lasse Sorensen
One of Town’s most exciting new signings last season, the right-back initially lived up to the hype with some superb performances.
Sorensen claimed three assists in as many outings at the very start of the season, including setting up both of Town’s goals in the 2-1 home win against Stevenage.
However, that was about as good as it got for the Dane, with his loss of form followed by a hamstring injury. Sorensen returned for the second half of the campaign and played more minutes after the mid-point of the season than before, but managed just one more assist (Josh Koroma’s equaliser away to Barnsley).
Part of Sorensen’s issue has been finding the most effective balance between his attacking and defensive duties; he’s yet to hit that Goldilocks spot consistently.
But if the Emley game was anything to go by — and we need to be careful not to read too much into one pre-season friendly — there could be a place in the Town side that suits Sorensen to a tee.
Whether it was Sorensen or Brodie Spencer, the right-back in that game played an attacking role reminiscent of the one Tommy Smith performed in 2016/17, with structures put in place behind the full-back to allow them to push forward more readily.
If Sorensen can rediscover his touch around the opposition box, that could be just the role for him.
