Huddersfield Town Q&A: Next manager, summer transfers, playing style, promotion prospects
We've got a fabulously varied selection of excellent questions to tackle in the written section of our Q&A - look out for Monday's podcast for the rest
This is just part one of the Q&A. We’ve saved the other half of the questions for the podcast, which will be out on Monday.
That includes your many questions about season cards and club finances, among other things, so Dave and I can discuss the different angles on that in more detail.
Massive thanks for all your varied and intelligent questions, really appreciate it!
Martin Griffin: The ‘shackles off’ narrative can work for a manager for a while, but it’s not a long-term strategy, it’s in response to a previous regime. How does Worthy pivot away from it?
Great question, and something Worthington is going to have to prove himself capable of doing.
To a certain extent I think that’s just a way of saying “I want to play more aggressive attacking football” in a way that appeals to the players and fans, and Worthington has said he has a lot more detailed thinking about what he wants than just “go and have fun, lads”.
I think as much as anything, a big part of the challenge for any manager over the longer term is keeping things fresh and interesting for the players as much as possible on the training ground to make sure important messages don’t start getting ignored as ‘heard it all before’ - same as in any workplace, really.
I found it interesting that Worthington talked about things like changing the training schedule to involve more periodisation and potentially looking at more of a squad rotation policy to go along with that.
Worthington insists he has plenty of ideas of his own about how he wants to do things on and off the pitch and stressed at his press conference that he feels he has more time to implement that this time than he did last year, when he says he was approaching things much more game-to-game.
I think realistically the current international break is the only real chance he’s going to get to do that, because the busy upcoming schedule means he will get little to no time on the training pitch until the last couple of weeks of the season and, hopefully, the play-offs.
Richard Holmes: Rumours have been circulating that Mark Cartwright is on his way out, do you know if there’s any truth to this?
