Huddersfield Town Q&A: Sporting director, Lee Grant's record and finances
Many thanks as ever for your questions - we had plenty more about matters on the pitch that will be covered in Monday's podcast
Ed Skippins: Does the club need a director of football?
First of all, I should say that as far as I’m aware, there aren’t currently any plans to bring one in. However, I couldn’t honestly say one way or the other if that will remain the case in the longer term.
It was certainly Town’s stated intention at the time they hired Lee Grant, but I gather that over the summer they were happy with the volume, speed and quality of the transfer work that was being done by Grant, Jake Edwards, and the recruitment team headed by Lee Maybury.
Grant’s title is manager rather than head coach, which does leave open the possibility they won’t go down the sporting director route for as long as he is in charge.
Still, some managers find there are certain organisational benefits to having a director of football/sporting director there to take things off their plate outside transfer windows — not every gaffer likes to be completely hands-on with every single facet of the football side of the club.
On the other hand, there are managers who relish having that level of autonomy and aren’t put off by the extra hours they have to put in on top of their coaching. The impression I get of Grant so far is that he falls into that category much more than some of his predecessors — but he is still a new manager and it’s possible some of that non-coaching stuff may lose its lustre for him over time.
As such, it’s hard for me to say from the outside whether that’s something the club and/or Grant think might be desirable in the future.
Jim: We now have the stadium. Future plans for the site might be unknown but how far do you think they might rely upon Town being a Championship/Premier League (ha!) side?
