Huddersfield Town ratings as 101st-minute penalty puts Terriers back in drop zone
The visitors looked to have won it through Josh Koroma's late strike but an extremely contentious penalty decision allowed Nahki Wells to equalise for Bristol City
Lee Nicholls - 6
Came under increasing pressure even before Town took the lead, without actually being given a huge number of big stops to make. Did well with what he had to, and was simply sent the wrong way by the late, late Nahki Wells penalty.
Matty Pearson - 6
Shifted over to right-back with Tom Lees back from injury. Put in the kind of unflashy but solid showing we usually get from Pearson at full-back.
Michal Helik - 7
Generally composed and well-positioned throughout. Booked for a somewhat wild high boot that caught an opponent late in the first half.
Tom Lees - 8
Returned to action after just over a month on the sidelines with a calf issue, picking up where he left off with a very capable defensive performance, including two imprssive blocks in the late stages.
Brodie Spencer - 6
Started at left-back. Had no complaints about his early booking after committing the most cynical of fouls. Like one or two other Town players, was not flawless with his defensive work but did a really good job of recovering quickly and getting back to win the challenge at the second attempt. Final ball was poor but defensive effort good.
Alex Matos - 6
Another Town player who went in the book early on to little complaint from the pitch (even if the away end disagreed). Had to stay on the right side of the law thereafter and caused us a few nervous moments. Did allow players to get past him around the box once or twice, but was able to recover quickly and make up for it. Made a particularly impressive challenge on the edge of the box shortly after the break that he had to get right. Great footwork to spin into the box and carve out a presentable chance for Rudoni in the second half.
David Kasumu - 7
Often ended up as the deepest-lying of Town’s midfielders, which he performed with good maturity and willingness to commit to duels without over-doing it. Perfectly-timed intervention as the game wore on to stop Wells getting clean in one-on-one with Nicholls on the counter.
Sorba Thomas - 6
Showed a tendency to overhit his through balls but was also involved in a few promising moves and delivered some good-looking crosses that had to be well-defended by the hosts. Put Town on the way to the late opener with a forward ball for Burgzorg having forced a save just a few moments earlier.
Jack Rudoni - 7
Took over from Ben Wiles at number 10 having been passed fit after two games out with a hamstring issue, and showed no particular ill effects from his time on the sidelines with a really good workrate on and off the ball. Dragged one of Town’s better openings wide of the post midway through the second half, and actually picked the wrong option by shooting in the build-up to Josh Koroma’s goal only for the deflection to land at the winger’s feet.
Josh Koroma - 8
Had a promising effort deflected wide in the first half after good work to get away from his man just enough to force the opening. Produced a few useful through balls and flicks to bring others into play in attack. Produced an almost Olivier Giroud-like scorpion kick that went straight at the keeper, before later putting away a simple finish after putting himself in the right place to capitalise on a counter-attack. Limped off late on having done his part.
Delano Burgzorg - 7
Went close to forcing an error out of Bristol City’s Max O’Leary a couple of times by charging him down, but the keeper was able to get away with it each time. Unable to find either Koroma or Rudoni with a ball across the box in the opening exchanges after doing well to carve out the opportunity to cross. Unconvincing in his claims for a 72nd-minute penalty after trying too hard to force the issue. Kept the ball alive well in the move that led to the goal, and tried to create a later chance for Rhys Healey that ultimately broke down.
Substitutes
Rhys Healey (for Matos 80) - Put on to give Town greater numbers up top, which paid off as their numerical advantage helped Koroma get the space to score. 6
Jaheim Headley (for Koroma 86) - Sent on due to an injury to Koroma taking over on the left wing. n/a
Ollie Turton (for Thomas 90+5) - Received a warm welcome back from his lengthy spell out injured. Extremely unfortunate to have a handball decision given against him in the 99th minute - no unnatural position whatsoever for a block of that kind. n/a
Unused substitutes: Chris Maxwell, Tom Edwards, Ben Jackson, Ben Wiles, Bojan Radulovic, Danny Ward.
