Huddersfield Town ratings as from EFL Trophy defeat at Harrogate
Owen Goodman's error gave Harrogate a 1-0 lead that they did not surrender, with the Terriers' poor finishing proving costly
Owen Goodman - 2
Gifted Harrogate their opener on his return to the side, passing straight to them on the edge of the Terriers box to allow them an easy opening that Ellis Taylor took full advantage of. Had little else to do all game.
Lynden Gooch - 5
Back in the starting line-up after six games out of it. Got close to an hour under his belt, which should serve him well for future games, but unable to offer loads here beyond his set piece deliveries.
George Iorpenda - 6
On competitive debut, partnering Murray Wallace at centre-back. Stopped Shawn McCoulsky getting clean through on Goodman soon after the break with a strong but fair shoulder challenge. Played some lovely long passes.
Murray Wallace - 6
Captain on the night. Came up with three big blocks in the first half, including one from a goalbound effort after Town again gave it away inside their own box. Seemed to be booked for re-entering the field without permission after getting treatment for a knock.
Sean Roughan - 5
Showed more adventure in the second half after a quiet first period. Crossing not what it needed to be. Had a couple of shots blocked after play resumed following a drone stoppage and set up a chance for Charles that was well saved.
Jay Sway - 5
Got his first competitive start, paired with Vost in central midfield. Struggled at times with the intensity and physicality of the Harrogate’s midfield when defending, especially early on. More convincing on the ball, carrying it well and playing a lovely ball over the top for Joe Taylor in the first half that the forward didn’t take full advantage of. Speculative with a couple of late strikes. Booked for an over-enthusiastic challenge late on.
Dan Vost - 5
Fortunate that his heavy touch and poor pass inside his own box to gift Harrogate possession didn’t result in a second gift of a goal. Tidier in the second half as Huddersfield pushed for an equaliser.
Dion Charles - 6
Played in the Harness role off the right wing. Town’s brightest player in an otherwise tepid first-half performance, creating promising chances for both Taylor and Bojan Radulovic that went to waste. Constantly pressing and hassling the opposition. Booked for a dive early in the second half. Tested the keeper in added time
Bojan Radulovic - 4
First Town start since February. Operated as a number 10 but not terribly effective in the role. Had a really good opportunity to equalise sooner after the opener after meeting Charles’ knockdown, but skied it. Went up top for the closing stages. Had a late ‘equaliser’ ruled out for offside.
Cameron Ashia - 5
Pretty quiet in the first period but more involved in the second half and looked a threat from the left wing.
Joe Taylor - 4
Succeeded in getting in behind the Harrogate defence several times in the first first half, but usually in wide areas, and unable to exploit it when Sway played him over the defence to release him up the middle. Put a fierce shot straight at the keeper after Charles’ pressing forced a loose ball into the box that sat up nicely for him. Will be frustrated with his wastefulness in front of goal.
