Huddersfield Town ratings as Rotherham swept aside to secure Vertu Trophy progress
Goals from Will Alves, Lasse Sorensen and Cameron Ashia gave the Terriers the most straightforward of victories to put them into the quarter-finals
Lee Nicholls - 6
Could have brought a blanket and had a nice lie down if he’d wanted and it would have made no difference.
Radinio Balker - 6
No issues.
Murray Wallace - 6
Captained the side from the middles of the back three. Had not issues whatsoever as he went about his business calmly and effectively.
Josh Feeney - 6
Started on the left of the back three. Comfortable throughout.
Lasse Sorensen - 7
Doubled the lead by heading into a practically empty net on the rebound from Will Alves’ shot being tipped onto the crossbar. Absolutely fine performance on the right flank.
Marcus Harness - 6
Reverted to a box-to-box role having been ineffective at 10 at the weekend. Booked for a cynical foul on 12 minutes. Quick to get the ball forward
Marcus McGuane - 7
Got his first start for the club and his first appearance since August. Looked very capable both in and out of possession, and is more dynamic and willing to carry the ball than we had expected. Went off at the break in a planned change but a promising 45 minutes.
Cameron Ashia - 7
Started at left wing-back. A typical Ashia outing in the first half: great running, beat men for fun, but final pass and shot was repeatedly lacking until he finally came good with a lovely finish for Town’s third goal.
Alfie May - 6
Returned from the knock that kept him out against Stockport. Led the defence from the front with a good intense press. Seemed to have a bit of free license to roam and split his time between centre-forward and number 10, more often appearing in the latter role in a 3-4-2-1. Missed his big chance late on after being put through one-on-one with the keeper only to shoot straight at him. Nice pass in behind for Ashia to run onto and score.
Will Alves - 8
First start since September. Put a decent shooting chance high and wide on 15 minutes. Rotherham defenders couldn’t get near him and he made full advantage of that to fire Town into the lead, turning away from his man and finding the top corner from outside the box. Had a similar effort superbly saved only for Sorensen to head home the rebound. Suffered a knock just before he went off but the substitution already seemed to be in motion so hopefully no issue there.
Joe Taylor - 6
First start since the last round of the competition last month. Had a first-minute strike correctly ruled out for offside. Didn’t have many chances to speak of after that despite some decent movement, which wasn’t really his fault. Good pressing, particularly to put pressure on the Rotherham goalkeeper.
Substitutes
Ryan Ledson (for McGuane 46) - Took over that box-to-box midfield role alongside Harness. Great cross for Mickel Miller on 83 minutes, but it was turned over the bar. 6
Mickel Miller (for Alves 60) - On for his first outing since November. Shot over the bar when he had to score from close range late on. 6
Lynden Gooch (for Harness 75) - Straight swap in the central midfield role. Lovely pass to play in May for that squandered chance. 7
Ruben Roosken (for Balker 75) - Came on at left-back in what looked to be a switch to a 4-2-3-1. 6
Unused substitutes: Jak Alnwick, Dion Charles, Bojan Radulovic.
