Huddersfield Town ratings as truly abysmal first half leads to defeat at Wigan
The Terriers fell to a 2-1 loss in Wigan after putting in perhaps their worst 45 minutes of the season, with a mild second half improvement not enough to earn anything
Lee Nicholls - 7
Left one-on-one with Dale Taylor for Wigan’s opener, which came sandwiched between two fabulous saves to deny strikes from each of Wigan’s wingers. Had to come off his line to deal with a couple of balls over the top.
Lasse Sorensen - 6
Did his job for the 90 minutes, which is more than we can say for the rest of the outfield. Had plenty of crossing chances after the break but unable to make them count.
Brodie Spencer - 3
Back from suspension to partner Nigel Lonwijk at centre-back. Missed the opportunity to win a tackle on Taylor as he went clean through to make it 1-0 to Wigan. Better when faced with the same one v one five minutes later, but damage already done. Struggled for the rest of the first half, better in the second.
Nigel Lonwijk - 4
Got caught stepping out of the back line to go to Wigan midfielders a few times — needed to be more aware of the threat he was allowing in behind. Unusually wayward with his passing. Didn’t really do anything to help on the way to Wigan’s second goal.
Josh Ruffels - 5
Had a tough time up against Wigan’s star man Jonny Smith. Could have done with more support.
Ben Wiles - 3
Again started on the right wing in a 4-4-2, where his is still yet to do an at all convincing job. Completely anonymous for the opening 35 minutes, which is not acceptable for a player with so much attacking impetus on his shoulders. Had a dinked effort easily cleared off the line not long before the break and claimed for a penalty in the process. Played a part in the move that produced Callum Marshall’s goal. Still only adds up to a handful of decent minutes across the game.
David Kasumu - 4
Failed to bounce back from his below-par performance at the weekend. Not sure he’s really the man for a midfield duo — has been better as one of three in the middle this season. Went off with an injury before the hour, hopefully nothing sinister.
Antony Evans - 4
Into the starting line-up with Jonathan Hogg absent. We know he’s not fully fit and he looked it at times, losing too many individual battles in midfield. Looked better on the ball than many of his colleagues but that really isn’t saying much.
Josh Koroma - 3
Played what amounted to left wing in a midfield four. Looked reluctant to pull the trigger even when he appeared to have half a chance of getting a shot off in a strangely neutered performance. Didn’t make a good decision all game.
Callum Marshall - 4
Never found his feet in the first half, with one aimless backpass into his own half from the edge of the opposition box particularly drawing the ire of the away fans. Better second half and got his first goal since December with a good run to the back post allowing him a tap-in just after half time.
Dion Charles - 4
We see from the teamsheet that he played the first half. Good work to beat his man and put in an unmissable low cross to the back post for Marshall to score.
