Huddersfield Town ratings from deeply uninspired defeat at Bristol Rovers
Michael Duff's side never looked like scoring after going behind to a tenth-minute goal in a dreadful 1-0 defeat to a relegation-battling side
Lee Nicholls - 5
Caught off his line by a well-taken lofted finish as Rovers took the early lead, but never should have been put in that position and not a whole lot he could have done about it. Wayward with some of his kicking.
Ollie Turton - 4
Showed some signs early on of forming a partnership with Lasse Sorensen up the right by getting forward from centre-back, but didn’t sustain it and did not have the required accuracy with his passing. Looked leggy in the closing stages.
Brodie Spencer - 4
Lined up in the middle of the back three. Poor ball out of the box to give the opposition possession and then didn’t seem to react to the ball over the top into his territory from which Rovers scored.
Josh Ruffels - 6
Played some good forward balls directly into the strikers and provided the cross for Sorensen to head on goal. Sacrificed in a late tactical switch.
Lasse Sorensen - 5
Back in at wing-back as Turton went to centre-back. Had a header saved off Ruffels’ cross as Town looked for an immediate response to going behind, then had a strike saved soon after the break when me probably should have done better. Crossing not great. Got back superbly to snuff out a couple of Rovers counter-attacks, though may have been lucky to escape a handball shout on one of them.
Antony Evans - 5
Contested for the ball to good effect but often found a wall of his former colleagues blocking his forward passing routes. Would have liked to see him arriving into the box more.
Joe Hodge - 5
Hassled and harried well, particularly from the edge of the Town third. Did nothing particularly wrong, nor anything particularly great. Booked for a necessary but cynical foul on halfway to stop a counter-attack off a Town set piece, which made his withdrawal a few moments later virtually inevitable.
Ruben Roosken - 4
Not in the game as much as we would like on the ball first half and looked to be unaware of Jack Hunt’s presence at times. Looked more like it for a spell after the interval, but very lucky that Hunt didn’t exploit a mistake late on that gifted the former Town man the ball on the edge of the box.
Tawanda Chirewa - 4
Struggled to have an impact on the game in the first half and was only given ten minutes to show an improvement after the break — which he did a bit, but not enough to avoid being replaced.
Dion Charles - 3
In for the injured Josh Koroma. Went close to providing an immediate equaliser only for his half-saved shot to be headed off the line. Again worked hard off the ball, but constantly strayed into offside positions to render him not an option in the attack or kill promising moves. No surprise he was the first man subbed.
Callum Marshall - 6
Chased down every ball that went up his side and won a couple that looked like lost causes, but needed far more support than he got — and was unable to find his teammates on the rare occasions he did get it. Had absolutely nothing created for him.
Substitutes
Joe Taylor (for Charles 56) - Showed off his pace and trickery on a couple of occasions, but seen too fleetingly. Yellow carded for what looked to be dissent. 4
Ben Wiles (for Chirewa 57) - Brought a more physical approach to the number 10 role, which Town needed, but no more able to impact proceedings in the final third. 4
Jonathan Hogg (for Hodge 68) - Took over the tackling and linking midfielder role. Cut a frustrated figure. 4
Freddie Ladapo (for Ruffels 79) - Made the front two into a three, to no discernible effect. n/a
Unused substitutes: Jacob Chapman, Loick Ayina, Cameron Ashia.
