Huddersfield Town ratings from poor, sloppy showing in defeat to Blackpool
The Terriers once again failed to turn up at the John Smith's Stadium with Steve Bruce's side claiming a 0-2 win off stupid mistakes without being troubled too much
Lee Nicholls - 5
Nothing much he could do on the goals with Blackpool’s cross for the first simply too high for him before facing a one-v-one for the second. Didn’t have many saves to make or crosses to claim beyond that.
Tom Lees - 5
Switched to the middle of the back three following Michal Helik’s early departure from the game. Not particularly culpable for Blackpool’s efforts with responsibility lying elsewhere.
Michal Helik - n/a
Had to go off after pulling up with what looked to be a hamstring issue just 16 minutes in.
Nigel Lonwijk - 5
Generally quite good but with a few notable dodgy moments that count against him significantly. Slightly fortunate to get away with a couple of underbaked backpasses in the first 25 minutes, prompting a word from Lee NIcholls. Was beaten to CJ Hamilton’s cross as Kyle Joseph headed home at the back post to give Blackpool their first-half lead.
Lasse Sorensen - 4
Took up a notably deeper starting position after his flank was exposed repeatedly against Northampton. Still could have done better to get back on Blackpool one attack that Brodie Spencer ended up dealing with well. Left early in the second half without having much influence on the game.
Herbie Kane - 3
Made his first league start for the club after returning from the bench on Saturday. Started promisingly but looked more and more desperate, no more so than when he unnecessarily committed to ground to allow Hamilton clean up the flank to cross for the opening goal. Miscued a shot late in the first half from the edge of the box as Blackpool scrambled, and kept trying Hollywood balls that generally came to nothing. Could chalk it up to rustiness after his injury lay-off
Joe Hodge - 6
Unsurprisingly included after his bright showing against Northampton. Got away from trouble with smart turns and used the ball positively. Turns out a one-man midfield has it difficult, though. Better in the first half than the second.
Ben Wiles - 2
Had a hand in couple of early attacking moves, but was unable to provide the final ball. Repeatedly slow to get back in response to Blackpool counters which allowed them a lot of time in midfield, or to get to the edge of the box to help Town out in their own third. Rounded it off with an awful pass that Blackpool intercepted and then went on to score their second. Awful. Absolutely stunned to see him come out for the second half, when he did put in a more of a shift, but still unable to get much to happen.
Jaheim Headley - 6
Much more responsible performance after his awful showing at the weekend. Could have done with more help from Wiles that he didn’t get, but dealt with things well regardless. Played some useful ball up the left for Wiles and Ladapo and drove into the box superbly in Town’s best attack of a toothless first half. Moved to left-back soon after the break and continued to fare decently off the ball, though occasionally his work on it left something to be desired.
Josh Koroma - 4
Rarely seen in the first half, and had started to tire by the time the hour arrived after chasing shadows in the Town press all game. A 4 of anonymity more than anything.
Freddie Ladapo - 4
Same goes, really. Came in for Callum Marshall for his first Town start. Was the target of a log of long balls in the first half that he did his make to make something out of, but lacked support.
Substitutes
Brodie Spencer (for Helik 18) - Had to feel his way into the game a bit after coming off the bench to go on the right of the back three. Made a great tackle on Joseph to stop him getting a great chance, but looked like he could have done much better to stop the ball getting to Hamilton for the second goal, which was really poor. Switched to right-back early in the second half. Good delivery for Radulovic’s header late on and got across the box well to intercept a cross a few minutes later, before picking up a needless late booking. 4
Callum Marshall (for Sorensen 54) - Sent on to turn the 3-5-2 into a 4-3-3. Had a deflected strike tipped over the crossbar soon after coming on — his only notable action of the game, and Town’s only real notable chance to that point. 4
Antony Evans (for Kane 54) - Hurt his shoulder making a sliding tackle just a few minutes after coming on, but was able to continue. Continued where Kane left off in being a tad over-ambitious with his passing, but did more to help out off the ball. Generally poor with set piece deliveries. 4
Bojan Radulovic (for Ladapo 70) - Took over in the middle of the front three. Had a decent header well saved and put himself about a bit better than we’ve seen previously. 5
Unused substitutes: Jacob Chapman, Matty Pearson, Jonathan Hogg.
