Huddersfield Town have announced the arrival of Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old stopper has spent the past season-and-a-half on loan at League Two side Salford City and signed a new long-term contract with Sunderland last month.

The England youth international has a total of 91 senior appearances under his belt for Salford and Darlington.

Town sporting director Chris Markham said in a club statement: “Matty is one of the most highly-rated young goalkeepers in the country, and we’re delighted to bring him to the club ahead of the upcoming campaign and get him acquainted with his new teammates and surroundings early in pre-season.

“His experience at both club and international level is exceptional for his age, and those who’ve worked closely with Matty cannot speak highly enough of his attitude, application and desire to improve, which are all characteristics we’re keen to see in every Town player across the club.

“Strong in every key area for a goalkeeper and blessed with natural size and presence, we’re thankful to Sunderland for trusting us with the next stage of Matty’s development and hope to see him join a long line of young Premier League talent who’ve cut their teeth with us in West Yorkshire.”

Head coach Martin Drury added: “After watching a lot of Matty, it was clear as to why he’s regarded so highly.

“While he already demonstrates many of the qualities we were looking for on the pitch, his good character and hunger to improve were evident when meeting with him. He showed a desire to come and play here and we’re excited to work with him and Sunderland to further his development, while strengthening us in that position.

“Matty will work closely with head of goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside to ensure he makes a positive contribution next season.”

Matty Young scouting report

There is a lot of buzz that Matty Young might be destined for big things.

Young is regarded as perhaps the best English goalkeeper of his age and has been accelerated through the England youth teams, earning his first cap for the U20s when he was just 17 and earning his first call-up for the U21s last August.

Salford Now described Young as having been ‘instrumental’ to the club’s success after he was nominated for the League Two young player of the year award alongside Tom Iorpenda.

The Roker Report have meanwhile hailed Young as ‘the most promising home-grown goalkeeping prospect since Jordan Pickford’ after his excellent performances for Sunderland’s youth team, drawing parallels between Young’s loans at Salford and the England number one’s time at Notts County and then Preston North End.

But the question for Huddersfield Town is not what Young is going to be in a few years’ time, but how good he is now.
