Huddersfield Town Women secure emphatic cup win against Nantwich
The Terriers are through to the second round of the FA Cup after beating Nantwich Town 7-0
Huddersfield Town Women cruised to a 7-0 victory over Nantwich Town in the FA Cup this afternoon. First-half goals from Charlotte Stuart and Molly Firth were complemented in the second by two from Autumn Housley, another from Stuart, one from Ashley Tirpke, and a late tap-in by Kate Mallin.
After such a dominant performance (the Terriers also had two disallowed for offside and hit the woodwork twice in the first half-an-hour alone) it would be impossible to give out scores. Instead, here are a few lines on each of the players who wore blue and white today.
Kacey Bolton-Woollam
Had very little to do but dealt with things well when called upon. Her main contribution was occasionally joining in as a sweeper.
Beth Stanfield
The captain did all the things she does well and was neat and tidy on the ball. She played a couple of great defence-splitting passes that helped Town exploit the flanks — something they did all game, overwhelming the opposition.
Charlotte Stuart
Busy. Constantly on the move, constantly calling for the ball. Just constant. Set the tone for Town on an afternoon we suspect she really enjoyed.
Leah Embley
Did well on the ball, consistently pressed Nantwich’s midfielders into mistakes and recycled the ball just as you’d want. Not her most testing afternoon, admittedly, but she won nearly every duel with ease.
Ella Duffield
Worked her socks off, read the game well and was often the reason the Nantwich counter-attack was over before it had even begun.
Rebecca Beresford
A less eventful afternoon than some but always willing. Did a lot of work off the ball — quietly effective.
Autumn Housley
Great finishing in the second 45 saw her build on a solid first half performance. A couple of intelligent late runs into the box didn’t get the passes they deserved.
Yasmin Mason
Good showing. Wasn’t as involved as she would have liked, and kept finding herself in traffic. Even so, when she did earn some space she consistently found ways to create something or get the ball into good areas.
Ashley Tiripke
A bit of a rollercoaster. Great striker’s finish for the goal, which came shortly after she missed an open net. She was a real thorn in the side of Nantwich’s defence and on another afternoon we suspect she would have scored four. Never stopped moving and created a lot of space for others as Town’s midfield drifted into the box whenever they fancied it.
Molly Firth
Saw a lot of the ball one-on-one with (for our money anyway) Nantwich’s best player and did excellently. Thoroughly deserved her first-half goal and consistently made the right decisions on the ball. A great afternoon’s work.
Serena Fletcher
Rarely lost the ball, passed well, noticeably vocal moving others into space around her. A very polished game.
Substitutes
Kate Mallin - Provided some quality from the left and looked comfortable from the minute she walked onto the pitch. A late goal added some icing to an already heaving cake.
Ria Montgomery - Tried to get involved but came on when the game was all but over — one lovely give and go deserved more than it got.
Liv Dawson - Promoted from the U18s for the game and looked at home when she came on. Adjusted to the pace of the game immediately.
Lucy Grice - Flew into a couple of tackles and really tried to make a mark in the time she had — feels like someone who will eventually play a lot at this level.
