Huddersfield Town's transfer and manager approach now faces ultimate test
The managerless Terriers got all their high-priority signings done earlier in the window but were unable to tick off their final item on the wishlist. Will it be enough for the new manager?
The transfer window has closed for the rest of the season after deadline day passed without any further new arrivals at Huddersfield Town.
The club had already fulfilled all the requirements they had laid out coming into the January transfer window by adding Chelsea midfielder Alex Matos on loan alongside the permanent signings of strikers Bojan Radulovic and Rhys Healey from HJK and Watford respectively, as well as centre-back Radinio Balker from Groningen.
They have been supplemented by the return of defender Brodie Spencer from a loan spell at Motherwell, with the Northern Ireland international already establishing himself as a first-team regular having gained much needed experience over the first half of the season.
(Scott High and Kieran Phillips have both been recalled from loan spells due to injury, but at this stage it seems unlikely that either will play any major part in the club’s first-team plans this season.)
Kevin Nagle had acknowledged going into deadline day that the club ideally wanted to make one more signing before the window shut – but the chairman also forewarned fans that may not come to pass with players of sufficient quality to improve the side all commanding too high a financial outlay at the end of a month that has already seen the club spend millions.
Nonetheless, Town will be satisfied with the recruitment work Mark Cartwright and Lee Maybury have overseen this month and will be hopeful the signings will allow their new manager to achieve better results and lift the team away from the threat of relegation.
