My Presser With Andre: Inside Breitenreiter's first press conference
Key moments and first impressions of the new Huddersfield Town head coach after his inaugural meeting with the media
We’re getting used to doing new gaffers’ first press conferences at Huddersfield Town, unfortunately, but this one…felt a bit different.
This was a rather more sedate affair than the circuses that accompanied the unveilings of Darren Moore and especially Neil Warnock, where the veteran manager’s hiring and subsequent firing were big enough news to draw in elements of the national media who are not usually seen around this parish.
This time, it was mostly the hardy veterans of the Huddersfield Town beat who either made the journey in to the Good Ol’ Millers Oils or dialled in over Zoom: me, BBC Radio Leeds and Look North’s Paul Ogden, the Yorkshire Post’s Stuart Rayner, ITV’s Chris Dawkes, and Chris Dunlavy of the Football League Paper.
That is reflective both of the club’s stature — they are, at this point, back to being just another long-standing lower-half Championship side — and of Andre Breitenreiter’s relatively unknown status in England, for all his accomplishments abroad. Neither his name nor Huddersfield Town’s are going to generate many clicks in the English-speaking world. That should not be read as a slam on Town; simply a statement of fact.
However, the vibe around the training ground is positive, with several members of the club’s back-office staff speaking highly of how courteous and impressive Breitenreiter and his staff have been since arriving at the club.
That’s a small thing, of course. What’s more important is how the players respond to the gaffer and his methods. But it’s always nice to hear, nonetheless, and the mood overall is reflective of the general fanbase: cautious optimism. Those of us in the press, too, went away feeling much the same thing.
