Jack Rudoni sale comes with Huddersfield Town transfer pros and cons
The midfielder's move to a Championship side was perhaps inevitable, but leaves the Terriers with a big gap to fill in an already light position
Huddersfield Town had suggested that some players might be sent to Coventry this summer. Now, they’ve fulfilled that promise in the most literal sense by sanctioning Jack Rudoni’s move to the Sky Blues.
As quickly as the deal came together, it will not have surprised anyone. If you were making a list of Town’s most saleable assets who might attract Championship interest and an irresistible transfer fee, Rudoni would have sat at or near the top alongside Lee Nicholls, Michal Helik, Brodie Spencer and Sorba Thomas.
There’s a lot to be said for Town completing their first major sale relatively early. One of our fears coming into this summer transfer window was that Town might not attract serious bids early enough to allow them to do all their business in good order and on time.
Mark Cartwright assured us at Michael Duff’s unveiling as head coach that he expected Town would be able to afford to complete several deals without selling. But the scale of the squad overhaul the club envisage goes well beyond “several”.
If Rudoni — or any of the others — were going to be sold, better it should happen now than in the final week of the window. Such a scenario would leave them in limbo, holding off on making potentially important signings as they await a book-balancing offer for one of their existing players.
The issue now, of course, is finding a successor to Rudoni. When discussing the squad make-up and the inevitable sales that would lie ahead this summer, I had earmarked Rudoni as one player the club should try to hold onto.
