Key takeaways from Lee Grant's first press conference as Huddersfield Town boss
Transfers, coaching staff, playing style, and the sporting director role were all discussed at Lee Grant's first presser as Terriers boss
Huddersfield Town are treating this as a fresh start
And they need it, let’s be honest.
Town’s appointment of a highly-regarded, detail-oriented coach who is as yet unproven as a manager already reflected their desire to hand the playing side of the club over to someone with a clear philosophy who puts football performance first.
It became abundantly clear early on in the presser that Grant and the club acknowledge the need to change tack from what they have done in recent years, and the new manager has been tasked with bringing different ideas and ways of doing things to Huddersfield Town.
Grant said: “Part of what I see as a really fantastic opportunity is the opportunity for me and my coaching team, working alongside Jake [Edwards, CEO] and Kevin [Nagle, chairman], to actually create a new framework and a new template for the club moving forward.
“There’s been some wonderful work done, in my opinion, over the course of the last 12, 18, 24 months, but lots of that gets lost in results and where the club has found itself in its recent history.
“What I propose to do, and what it’s really important we do, is to build on that work: finding really good people behind the scenes, developing good practice and good processes. Certain from a playing perspective and a culture perspective, they’re all the things we’re trying to drive home.
“We’re trying to do that in such a way that it will look and feel a bit different to what’s gone before.
“I am my own man, as a result of all the things and places I’ve been and experience I’ve had, but we are certainly going to look to drive and create this new template and push forward. We want to create a new product and one we can all get behind.”
So what does that look like?
“I think the qualities we’re going to have on display are qualities that Huddersfield Town really need,” Grant said.
“We want players that can work really hard, first and foremost; we want players who have a desire to be here and for the right reasons; that are hungry, enthusiastic and motivated; that are bright eyed and ready to work every day.
“They’re all the things we’re looking to recruit and that we’re looking to demand from the boys that are here as well. It’s not just about who’s coming in the door.
“It will look different, it will feel different from a playing perspective. I want to play in my own way and it’s not going to be a style of football that I don’t think the fans will like: I think the fans are going to love it, I think they’re going to enjoy it. I certainly believe the players are going to enjoy training it.
“In terms of that belief and trust, I’ve got to earn it, for sure. The fans are going to have to turn up on day one and feel like this is something they can get behind, and that’s my goal: to make sure that really clearly, from day one, the fans are able to say ‘I like the look of this’.”
The sporting director role is uncertain at the moment
Grant spoke about being comfortable with being the face and spearhead of a new-look Huddersfield Town, and it was notable that he has been given the job title of manager, rather than head coach.
