Lee Nicholls pens new Huddersfield Town contract
The goalkeeper has agreed terms on a new deal at Accu Stadium
Lee Nicholls has agreed a new deal at Huddersfield Town that ties him to the club until at least 2028.
The goalkeeper joined the Terriers in 2021 as competition for Ryan Schofield but immediately established himself as the number one with a virtually flawless debut campaign at the club, earning the club’s player of the year award and being named in the Championship team of the year as they reached the play-off final.
Nicholls is now one of Town’s longest-serving players, behind only academy graduate and fellow keeper Jacob Chapman, but has found himself fighting Crystal Palace loanee Owen Goodman for a place in Lee Grant’s side this season.
The 32 year old has however played a key role in Town’s run to the Carabao Cup third round, saving crucial penalties in the shootouts against Leicester City and Sunderland to set up this month’s clash with Manchester City. Nicholls is currently playing league football again thanks to Owen Goodman’s dismissal against Barnsley, which came with a three-match ban.
Nicholls said in a club statement: “I’m really happy to have extended my contract here, and it’s no secret how much this club means to me and my family.
“I’ve loved my time at Town, I want to see us pushing to be back where we belong and I want to be part of that effort in any way I can.
“My job is to knuckle down, continue working hard and training as best as I possibly can each and every day, driving standards on and off the pitch. Whether I am playing or not, my commitment isn’t in question, and I’ll either do enough to earn a place in the team or make the other goalkeepers around me better by pushing them to be at their best.
“The supporters have been incredible with me since day one, and that’s a faith and feeling I’m always desperate to repay. Thank you for making Huddersfield Town my home, and I hope we can continue working hard and deliver a season worth celebrating.”
Town boss Lee Grant added: “Lee has again proven himself to be a model professional this summer, and we haven’t hesitated in offering him a new contract with the club as a result.
“A talented goalkeeper and leader in the dressing room, his experience, drive and competitive nature are all assets to the group.
“At his best, there is no doubting Lee’s ability and what he brings to a team. Working alongside Owen each day, the way he is pushing, encouraging and helping his younger counterpart is admirable, and I haven’t been shy about sharing my desire to have two ‘number one’ goalkeepers available to us within the squad, which has become even more important in recent weeks.
“Committing the prime years of his career to the club, we know how much Lee has to offer both on and off the pitch. His attitude and approach is top class, and that mentality is something we didn’t want to lose from the dressing room. An extension well-earned, we’re delighted to keep him as part of our group moving forward.”
